H4831 & H4831sc

I have been buying a few different powders for some up and coming builds. I bought 4 pounds of the H4831sc today. I have never used this powder before. Is the only difference between the 2 that the H4831sc is a short cut? Lets say 40 grains of H4831 in 1 case and the same amount of the sc in another case, can you do that or are they 2 different beasts.

I use the H4831SC in one rifle that I have. Like Witchhunter stated Hodgdon says both are the same. However, equal powder weight charges of the SC boosted muzzle velocity 25 to 30 fps over the straight H4831 in my rifle. I have read that some others have also noted the slight muzzle velocity gain with SC over the standard H4831. The SC meters a little easier. I now use only the SC version in my rifle.

Every thing else being equal, the flame front may propagate faster in the SC due to the increased surface area exposed with the smaller kernels. This is not the same as burn rate. An example would be the rate that ice melts when comparing crushed to cube ice.

I have noticed that most use the sc version over the other when researching this powder due to it being a shorter cut and better metering. Being the same stuff and 1 a shorter cut and easier to meter why they even bother to make the longer cut.

Consider yourself a very lucky person as that powder is next to extinct and in very great demand.

I got lucky the last couple days and bought a bunch of H4831sc, varget, h4350, RL17, RL19, 4064, super performance and some others and a boat load of primers local. ;D

Someone must be buying the long cut. When it stops selling, they will stop manufacturing.

I have not seen any difference between the two that you would not see between different lot numbers of two cans of the same powder. Because the SC powder stacks better in a case you can get a little more of it in a case than you can with the regular.
