H&R m12 or Kimber 82g

Just wondering if anyone has both of those rifles or has shot both. Looking at one with peep sights to maybe buy for me and my son to shoot some in some small backyard matches. Just curios which is the best bang for the buck money wise. Thanks.

Have never had an 82G shoot any of our longrange matches. Still have some H&R 12s shooting including 2 we have with peep sights. The H&R stock is bulky but they really shoot well. I've heard getting any parts for an 82G is like finding a moonrock in your fish tank.

The Redfield sights on the Model 12 is super good quality and easy to find inserts for. We shoot ours prone or off bipods/bags and you would need to be in good shape to shoot one offhand. My pick would be the H&R based on having owned and shot a few.

Thanks. I have a m12 but it’s drilled and tapped and has scope but it does shoot well. Guess I should have mentioned that. But had a few guys tell me how well their 82g is but have never been around one.

I have had two of each, while they both shot pretty good, IMO there are better options available. I have several Remington 540X's,( that are usually at the same price point), again IMO, are a little more accurate. Now if the only options available were the Kimber and the H&R, I would have to go with the Kimber. If not and $$$$ are not a big issue, a Remington 40X or a Winchester 52D would be my rifle of choice.

I have an H&R M12 and a Winchester 52D, both from the CMP. The H&R isn't inaccurate and shoots pretty well with good ammo. But, I can't remember the last time the H&R was out to play because the 52D is more accurate, has a better trigger and feels like less of aiming a 2x4. A Redfield 3200 mounts on either one with only 1 moa difference in the zeros.

H&R model 12 . Ive got 5 kimbers ( 82g) and 6 H&R s . The H&Rs are by far the better built rifle . Kimbers look pretty but have quality issues and design issues.
I will trade beautiful Kimbers for H&Rs any day .

I’ve built on both of these actions.......the H&R is the better action, at least in my experience. It’s going to be difficult to wear out an H&R, the Kimber will wear, especially the cocking mechanism.
Didn’t Herb Smith win the 6 gun with a Bircher built model 12 H&R? Been awhile, but he sure did......Kimbers are fine, I’d go with the H&R though.....but that’s just one guys opinion.......

I am leaning that way. Thanks for info

I built a dedicated BR rifle from a M12 has a Benchmark 3G repined 2-oz. trigger and found it to be an excellent shooter. it has a massive receiver with the bottom being at least a 1/4" thick very solid. I won my first ARA UL under horrendous conditions with it at Ben Avery. the only thing I don't care for is how the firing pin and spring set up is arranged. it is bit involved in changing the spring. I am currently trying to see how I can thread the cocking piece to make removal easier for spring changing.
Here is what the rifle looks like. first picture shortly after new barrel was put on. second picture with a new BM HVRT. target was shot using four different lots of Lapua CX & Pistol King each shot was a random selected round then just aim and shoot no adjustment for the wind. I was testing the extraction as I had a couple stuck cases and worked on the problem.

I have had a M12 and the 82. My M12 was customized by someone and did a decent job. Mostly just a weird looking stock but was unique. It was a great shooter. The Kimber shot decent but never really impressed me to much. I guess I was expecting more for what they cost. Still a nice rifle though. My vote would be the Model 12.

I have seen 2 shooters with Kimbers and improved triggers shoot clean targets with hi X count on the IBS RF-BR 50 target. Long ago in Collage I shot indoor ROTC with the H&R. It was a club but I shot decent scores at 50 feet considering we were issued Winchester T22.

Isn't the IBS 50 yd RF target the one with a 1/2" 10 ring? If so, and I believe it is, that's really not very hard to clean with best-edge scoring. The high X count is more difficult but the shot only needs to touch the dot to score an X. Show me a high score on the USBR, IR50/50, or ARA UL targets that were shot with an 82G and I'll be more impressed. I know of two 82Gs that were capable and one had some work done on it

Yes, that has 1/2" 10 ring. when we shot that target, I used it to practice for ARA UL by trying to keep my shots inside the green ring without cutting it. when there was about 7 of us shooting UL at the club 750 were common and X count determined the winner.

Because we have a wide variety of different types of 22 LR rifles competing at our matches we chose that target for everyone to use. We have everything from Custom, high end target, more expensive magazine, to inexpensive rack grade rifles. With the prevailing conditions at our range clean targets are not common even with our better shooters and premium match grade ammunition. Only one shooter has fired a posable score of 500 and 4 others at least one 250 target. I have fired 3 clean targets in the 5+ years we have held this Match with my Walther KKM and RWS R-50. I like to alternate with my CZ 457 Varmint and the same ammunition and once managed a 245-10X in very mild conditions. Our matches are just for fun and usually we have to run multiple relays on our 8 bench range.
