H&R automatic 308

I have had this rifle for years , never would cycle . What little I have found on the internet doesn't tell me much . Tried cleaning it with no luck , finally took it to a gunsmith a couple weeks ago and he said it just needed a good cleaning . Thought I did that , but apparently didn't do it right . Brought it home and ran six rounds through it , it functions fine .
Anyone here ever own one ? What was your opinion on it ?

A picture, model number or something might be helpful. The only H&R automatic rifle I have seen was an H&R manufactured M-14.

What little I can find on them , it is either the 360 standard grade or 361 deluxe . Mine only states H&R Ultra Automatic , doesn't say any model number . It is a hunting rifle with a three shot magazine .

I did research on 308 semi hunting rifles a few years back and many said H&R was the best. I wanted one big time but never could find one in decent shape worth the money.

Yep , it's a H&R . Weather is supposed to be a stay in the house weekend . So it and a couple other recent toys will have to wait another weekend . Looking forward to see if it will continue to run good and how accurate it will be .

Will be interesting to see how it goes. Looked it up and immediately thought "Winchester 100", another auto from that era that went belly-up. And you are right, nothing like an HK...

These guns take me back to a time when it was Remington bronze points, wool coats, target "backers" made from oil drums, sight in on a paper plate (hit it twice? gud 'nuf) and "monster bucks" that weighed 125 pounds and had racks that wouldn't hold up a Christmas ornament. But gosh it was great to go to the big woods and go huntin! In PA the Amish auto 760 Remington ruled the woods, as did the 94 Winchester. At camp kalbassi was washed down with Iron City beer or Piels and farted out for days afterward, long before scent free was a thing. Deer came home on a roof or fender, and tasted like dirt and leaded fuel exhaust.

Good ol days!

Let us know how she shoots

Thanks snert , you gave me a good laugh and jogged my memory . Yep , back in those days , camo ? What's that ?
Hunters often with in seeing distance of each other .
Yep , things have changed .

Yesterday proved to be a flop with the H&R . Tried 180 gr core lokt , 165 gr Fusion , 165 gr accutip , and Hornady 178 gr ELD-X . Groups were extremely bad 4-6" three shot groups . The scope on it is the scope that came on the rifle , the old Tasco TV objective and the rings were the old see through type . So I am going to look into a weaver base and have some Burris signature Zee rings and an old 3-9 Leupold with a/o .
Will give that a spin and see how it goes .
Also tried a Ruger Scout out too , for the cost , was not impressed , but will give it another spin also , this time with a regular scope .
Savage 10 that I had just had restocked and bedded , shot really well . Shot SGK 165 gr over 45.5 gr IMR 4064 that averaged a pretty consistent 3/4" groups . Federal 165 gr fusion 1" 165gr accutip , 3/4" , Hornady ELD-X 178 gr , two inches .
The hand loads were the first load out the gate , so I am going to play with over all length and see what happens from there . Powder selection and charge seemed ok for a first load .
