H 335 powder

i have an opportunity to buy almost any amount of this powder at a very good price. years ago i shot some in a factory .223 and it shot ok. i have an assortment of custom guns now...223AI, 22 BRS, 6x45, 20 TAC, 6 BRS, a custom .223, and two .22-.250s. who shoots H 335 in what and how good is it...accuracy,speed and temp sensitivity? thanks.

It was originally a military powder for the .223 with 55 grainers. It shoots well in .223 and .223 AI and .222 Mag. Don't have any of your other calibers. The original surplus powder had calcium carbonate added to retard aging and this stuff burns quite dirty. Newer stuff is cleaner, similar to any other ball powder in that burning range. It is temp. sensitive. I've blown primers PD hunting in the summer with a load that didn't even look warm when developed in the spring.

Another note is that it meters great, I think Walt Berger used to use it in a 222 when he shot benchrest.

I have used a lot of H-335 in several .223 AI Rifles over the years . It meters very well and accuracy is exceptional. It is very temperature sensitive. As mentioned before, if you plan to use it in the warm months, work your load up in warm weather. I did that and never had a problem while shooting Prairie Dogs. I know of some guys that worked a load up in the winter and when they went P/Dog shooting, the first shot locked the bolt up----Completely. At the same time, my summer load dropped over 200 fps while shooting Coyotes in South Dakota in -20 degrees. I finally went to Benchmark. It shot just as accurately, same velocity and not temp at all.

It will work in all the cases your shooting. Great accuracy and speed. Meters like water. Temp sensitive like most old ball powders. An all around great powder. If I had access to all I wanted for a great price I would buy all I could.

I like it because of the muzzle flash and BOOM in my xp 100 in 308!

It does make a nice little fireball, I noticed that when I was shooting it in a deuce, even went so far as to compare it against other powders and yep, it makes a bigger flash than any of the others I tried.

My son uses it in his 223 with 40gr Vmax and gets amazing accuracy. Don't know the exact load, but the bullets are jammed and group sizes at 100 run in the low 2's.

I don't like how dirty it burns or how it gets all over the place when I reload. I find it in places afterwards that leave me scratching my head. I swear it is like beach sand.

It was pretty accurate in all three of my .223s, but I found stick powders like Varget and N133 that were more accurate. Plus there were more versatile.

The best powder in my 223 using 40 grain Nosler B.T.. Good speed and exceptional accuracy. Montana PGs hate it ;D

I use it for my .223 and I agree with all the good and bad comments about it. But the most important factor for me is the accuracy and consistency it promises when I load with it. I developed my favorite load in summer. Sure, winter means a drop in MV but I don't hunt in winter so for me it doesn't matter. I don't shoot PD's but I do shoot squeekers. Lot's smaller than PD's. H335 puts every round on target. If I had a chance to buy a lot of it at a very good price I wouldn't tell you about it; I'd just pack it away.

H335 is a fantastic powder for your 223, 223AI, 6x45, and 6BR that I have tried. Gene Harwood sat a world record at a Registered benchrest shoot in the 80's using H335 with his 60g bullets at 3700 fps out of a 24" one in 14 twist barrel. In my 22" barrel, it shot 60g at 3550 with amazingly small groups. I still use it today along with AA2230 in my 6 BR. You can expect very long barrel life with H335 with what ever you shoot it in.

Now with the temp sensitivity. We worked up our loads at 70-75*, never, never had a problem on the dog towns at 100*. You have to use some common sense. If your rifle likes the max load that the rifle and brass will take at 75*, at a point to where you are getting case head scuffing and increased bolt lift, of course you will have trouble with that load when the temp increases another 25*, hot barrel, with ammo getting hot sitting out in the sun.

I too am a big fan of H335.

However, I wouldn't use it in anything where I care about recoil. That pretty fireball you get is also a jet coming out of a rocket nozzle and it does propel the rifle rearward more than a powder like 4895 that lacks the spectacular display.

I tried it for "reduced" loads for Offhand in 308 using 125gr bullets. It beat the funk out of me. Recoil like shooting 175s.

With or without fireball, the recoil from the gas is the same - based on the weight of the charge and the pressure of the gas when the bullet exits.

+1 to Cat, Velocity and Bullet weight determine recoil - rather "impulse". Though rate of change in velocity can change acceleration profile over time... the energy out = energy in + losses.

I use H335 in my .223s/6x45/20P/6x6.8 with excellent speeds/accuracy etc. Id buy a load of it at a good price myself if I didn't have so much already.

+2 Cat. Recoil was why I went from 55 grain to 40. The heaver weight was just enough to loose the sight picture which is what PD shooting is all about.
