Working up loads for new Shilen 308win
I have posted a similar thread elsewhere. However, the thread seems to be more appropriate. I am in the process of applying for Fall 2017 at Murray State College Gunsmith associates program.

I would appreciate any suggestions in application and getting started with the program. If there are any graduates or experienced gunsmiths who would offer some kind advice, I would appreciate the help.

Start buying up some old cheap guns like Mausers and Rem 700's, Win 70's, etc. Because you usually have to provide your own firearms to work on in most of the schools...or convince friends and family to let you work on their guns.

If you can make an old military Mauser into a good functioning and shooting modern sporting rifle with scope mounts and all, the rest is pretty easy.

This^^ Also if your local community college has a machine shop class take it. Having a decent understanding of running a lathe and vertical mill will put you way ahead. Good machine skills help make good gunsmiths. Some welding expeirence doesn't hurt either.

+1, get practice working with small parts.

Rather than getting degree, diplomas and certifications, just go for experience and practice. Acquire knowledge regarding firearm safety. Learn things on using power tools, categorizations of firearm etc
