what is the best book or manual and where do i get it for learning the function and diagram of the remington 700 i would like to start to smith my own rifles but dont really know enough to get started. i have worked in a machine shop for about 6 years and took machine tool in school so ican do most of the stuff that is involved in smithing.any help is appreciaded. thanks john

Midway has a number of DVD's and books on accuracy. One of the books is "the gunsmith machinist" by Steve Acker and it is good to start with.

There are dimensioned mechanical dwgs of the Rem 700 online. However, if you really want to know how and why it works in the finest detail, get a copy of Stuart Otteson's book "The Bolt Action, Vol. I". It also has chapters on all the other classic bolt actions by different manuf.
It should be in every serious gunsmith's library.

The Steve Acker books are wonderful! The article in volume 1 about building a target rifle is particularly detailed and inspiring.
