Gunsmith wanted: Carbon fiber barrel

I'm posting this for a co worker. He wants to build a rifle with a carbon fiber barrel using a Win Model 70 action. Caliber will be 300 mag, 7mm STW or something similar and he is wanting 1/2 moa. Non of the local 'smiths want to take on the job. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Proof research or christensen does alot of em. I have done quite a few for myself and was awful nervous. If its a pre64 i can understand why nobody would want that responsibility- you only get one shot on a very expensive long leadtime barrel with extra steps involved. Most wont do a mod 70 barrel period so you gotta understand the reluctance.

I'm curious. Why the hesitation on pre 64 model 70s?

Simple matter of buying a M70 extractor cutter for your mill. JGS makes HS, PTG makes a carbide one and I'm sure other reamer manufacturers offer them also.

Well, Woodruff key cutters are not concave and you wind up with an extractor slot ala Springfield/1917 Enfield and this does not offer the case support under the slot like the Winchester 70 style does. Winchester designed the extractor for the 54/70 so that it would work with the better designed extractor slot. It also still offers a little of the coned breech in this area that may help the feed of spitzer type bullets.

Proof Research will make your barrel and install it for you. A friend of mine, Norm Crawford, shoots Proof barrels and does very well with them including a 200-19x at a 600 yard match 2 weeks ago. Give Proof a call. The weight savings on a hunting rifle is worth it and you won't give up any accuracy.

Can the CF barrel stuff...its a gimmic

Built two 300 WSMs on Proof Research Barrels and both shoot .5MOA if you do your part with hand loads. No problems here, no more a gimmic than any other custom barrel I have.

From the stuff I have studied, the carbon fiber acts as an insulator and can hold the heat in. On a 300 Win. Mag that wound not be good. I have seen some 22 rim-fire barrels that do very well, but more powder down the throat may not be a good idea.

Actually it pulls the heat away. Think carbon brake rotors on indy cars. I wouldnt have believed it either except a good friend of mine in the industry witnessed the heat testing first hand and i know on all of mine the carbon gets hotter than the stainless parts you can touch so id say its wicking the heat from the barrel which is what the tests proved where they embedded thermocouples in the carbon at various depths on belt fed machine guns

I had a client bring in a Christiansen Arms rifle for some work a number of years ago. I forget what it was chambered in other than a large 300 magnum of some flavor. I put a few rounds through it and was VERY surprised at how fast the barrel cooled, it never really got anything more than warm. That part impressed me, the rest was not so impressive..
