Gunsmith for a restoration......

Can anyone recommend a solid gunsmith for doing a restoration on a 1970's era Remington 700? Have my grandfathers old rifle that I would like to have the action blue printed and trued along with putting a barrel on it - gloss bluing to finish it off. I live in Wichita, KS but work in southeast Kansas but willing to ship the rifle where I need to in order to get the job done right.

Do you want it restored like made to look new, or just rebarreled and blued? If you aren’t looking for all the factory markings to match, I’d send it to Douglas for a cro-moly barrel and have their guy do the bluing. I had one done there recently and the results were very good.

The work you mention is far from restoration. The blueing today is not what it was in the 70’s, so I would say to ask for examples of what is offered from who ever you choose. You don’t mention any stock work, that is something I see less and less of in a lot of shops.

If your in Wichita, there were several shops in a 100 mile range easily that can accommodate you.

Doug Mossier ,Glenrock Blue LLC does a excellent job of bluing and polishing.
Glenrock blue is definitely a top choice, it’s all they do. If your gunsmith does the prep work as far as polish wanted, turnaround is a couple weeks, otherwise their backlog is 6 months or better. I’ve utilized them several times with just the blueing, no prep and turnaround was less than 3 weeks and the results were perfect

Same issue comes up with re-chroming car parts for a restoration.
We can thank the U.S. EPA for this.

I know many car restoration shops in Commiefornia ship their chrome to Meheeko for re-chroming.
