Guns overnight in Chicago.

Easy enough to google the laws and requirements for a non-resident to transport a firearm through IL. It's actually pretty easy to comply with the laws for a non-resident. Case the rifle and store in trunk unloaded with ammo in a separate location. Forget about concealed carry permit for a non-resident. IL doesn't recognize permits from other states.
This is what i do when I visit family.

Thanks guys, We are going from camp to NRA smallbore nationals and have 3 days to kill. I just wanted to take John to the Field Museum, & Sears Tower as he has never seen a "Big City" & it would fit on my need for a break. It is possible to stay in Indiana. Thanks for the info. Im not sure what we will do, Illinois looks scary.

I planned on taking my wife to field museum on our way through Chicago not long ago, BIG MISTAKE! Days inn costs alot for one night then we HAD to use Valet parking, more money BUT the real kicker was using Valet parking required a 24 hour minimum stay and you had no access to your vehicle. not to mention cost of dinner and field museum tickets. It was a very expensive plan! We jumped back in our vehicle and left!

go around Chicago, you wont miss a thing!

I’d avoid Chicago (and Cook county in general) if for no other reason than to avoid the Shitty traffic.

The route would be I65 to Indy, I74 to Bloomington I39 to Rockford 190 then I94 to Minneapolis. Adds half an hour total. I’d stop in Bloomington.
^^^ This!! Avoid Chicago like the plague. The traffic in that $h!t hole is horrible. I've gone through there twice on my way East from South Central WI. Looks easy enough on the map. Once I got held up in a traffic jam for almost 3 hours. The other time they were actually running street sweepers on Interstate and the delays were terrible. The route posted above theoretically adds time. In reality, it will surely save you time. In addition it's much safer. Illinois gun laws statewide in general suck. Keep your guns unloaded and in a case. Do not remove them from your car loaded and concealed.

Like timeout, I live in Eastern Wi, and go to great lengths to avoid Chicago. My Dad's family is from East Central Il, farm country, a place I dearly love. Since m early childhood had a fear of Chicago and was always on edge passing though. Can remember a time before the tollways and parents being on edge going threw that place. Found that on the tollways the middle on the night the traffic eases a bit, but may add another level of risk. Today the inner city of Milwaukee scares me just as much.

NRA Camp sends email sorry smallbore camp is canceled. What the h$!! this late there are no other camps so I spend the night looking and most of the day calling around. At3 CMP calls back as John was a previous camper we can get him into the outdoor smallbore in Minnesota. Great at least John is going to get some formal training. Look to fly, train, anything but drive the 13 hours, but I can't afford any of it. So OK we'll drive, what some discomfort as long as he gets to go to camp. However I can't go much past Chicago. I get muscle twitches that go into profound cramping which leads to intense pain. So if I want him to go to camp Chicago is about as far N day I can go.

Now John will have his legally purchased smallbore(my name as owner& I have consealed and carry) with us in the car and hotel in Chicago. Is that legal. What if anything do I need to do, or should we bypass Chicago for a longer route. I've heard so much bad about gun owners from IL Not sure what to do. Don't say hide it in the trunk, I want to follow all the laws, even if it means longer trip.

Help or suggestions please
Big issue with staying in Chicago is the possibility of bringing some bed bugs with you. Stay away.

just went to Minneapolis from Indy just 3 weeks ago, approx 10hrs from Indy-my route 465w to I74w to 280 bypass(davenport, rock island) to I80 west to DesMoines,Iowa,North on 35 to Minneapolis--- it was a breeze & enjoyable. try to avoid Indy & Minneapolis from 7-10am & 4-7pm.

Nerve pain that cause muscle contractions is not explainable to people that haven't had tremendous damage.
Like a 110 volt stuck to certain places that cannot be rubbed for comfort.
Ibuprofen & gabapention are my go to's.
Cruise control also.
Glad y'all can do these things.

Drive the route several times a year. A few weeks ago on way from Fargo to Butner, took Google's fastest route which was through Chicago perhiphery. On way back ditched that plan and took "slower" route which sounds similar to dedeadeye's. Kinda the two sides of a triangle vs the hypotenuse. Between construction and Chicago traffic on "faster" route, made much better time on way back (and saved $12+ in tolls). Drew

(and saved $12+ in tolls).

lol , i forgot to mention Chitcago tolls!!! without easy pass you pull over all he time and toss in money! we missed one somehow any yes. got a ticket in the mail.

Hey how did you know about the 210volt attached to my leg. LOL I couldn't do this untill John started driving. I can scoot the chair all the way back and put my leg straight. It's not comfortable, but you do what you have to for your kids. You should see me walk when I first get out of the car. I look like Quasimodo hunched dragging my leg. Thanks guys. I have 2 weeks of shooting to look at all our options. I appreciate you all.
