Guns/Handgunner magazines GONE

Dang, this thread is goin off the rails!! :p

You guys must have been deprived. I had an older sister who had a subscription to "SEVENTEEN". jd

The little magazine that the Pennsylvania Game Commission publishes (the "Game News") is a treasure as long as you can get past the game commission propaganda. I really hope that it can remain a printed magazine rather than digital.
If you recall the heyday of PGN, you recall "Retch Sweeny" and some inspired writing. As well as excellent artwork of Ned Smith.

Now the writers...particularly the Field notes section read like a poorly composed text.

Speaking of Retch Sweeny -- I grew up with him. And we used to hang out at Rancid's place, although we knew him as Ol' Man Washburn. Ya get a buck if you can remember the dog's name. jd

I and my father-in-law had stacks of magazines of various types stashed away. Guns, electronics, HAM radio, airplanes, cars, machining, etc, etc, etc. At first we slowly got rid of stuff that was way out of date or just not of interest anymore. Over the years got it down to a single bookcase of stuff.

Finally got rid of the rest of it a decade ago. I am one who embraced the digital stuff early on. When the big drop in storage media prices happened I went all in. Anything in print I wanted to keep I scanned and stored on a media of one type or another, including a few books. A good printer with an auto feed will scan a bunch of stuff without much trouble. Right now the stuff I don't look at much is on an SSD with backup on some cards. Amazing how much you can store on something that fits in your pocket. I have 2TB on my laptop and it isn't even 20% full.

The books we have left won't even fill up one shelf on a book case. Most of those are kept because they are rare editions.

I hope that Wolfe publishing continues with handloader, rifle and the varmint magazines. They normally have decent articles. Just stinks they’re hard to find in stores.

You are killing me Smalls!

It's on the tip of my tongue but I am not rememberin! I first thought "Snert", but that is Hagar the horrible's pet beagle. Dobe is the guy in the SKelton stories. Rancid was a hoot! Patrick McManus was a genius.

Strange, I can't remember...;):D

I've got a stack of Handgunner magazines from the late 90's through the 2000's. When the editor changed I didn't like it as well.

Ill take that buck from ya JD...
You got it buddy. I must admit that I had to ask my girlfriend Chatty to get it myself. I'll need your current addy, and don't be surprised if I fill a large flat rate box with stuff from my loading room. I think you've got more room than me. ;) jd

I like Rifle and Handloader magazines by Wolfe Publishing better than other rags out there and you can still get them printed - bi monthly.

Wolfe Publishing
Those are the ones I like. I should subscribe. For a year or two now I have been tossing The American Rifleman. It used to be one of the top magazines.

I think the Wolfe publishing magazines are much richer in actual information and very much less about "reviewing" new guns with glowing results. I like Handloader and Rifle. Layne Simpson at Shooting Times is also very detailed in his articles. He and Kenny Jarret come up with the 7MM STW.

I’ve got probably 25 yrs worth of Shooting Times in boxes in the basement. Along with various years of several more publications including Handgunner. My book shelves in the living room are all full. I’ve always got a book I’m reading on. Currently on “The Hunters of Kentucky” A Narrative History of America’s First Far West, 1750-1792. I do have a TV and DVD player for a rerun western maybe once a month but no cable or antenna. It’ll soon be time to sit in front of the fireplace and read on cold snowy days. Well until the dog gets bored.
