Gun vs Rifle

How many tubs of Varget or perhaps Vihtavouri N150 would it take to reload the 'gun' as opposed to the rifle?
And could anyone afford it? But in these days of scarcity of powder, primers etc, then I am sure that you could only manage to get one shot out of the naval gun!
Pick the rifle every time unless your intent on invading a foreign power, then pick the gun.

Guns and Ammo had a write up about the 16 inch guns on the New Jersey class boats. The magazine said that they used 6, 110 pound silk bags ( pressed into a cake that fit the breech ) per shot. The projectiles were 2400 lb and 2800 lb and had a range over 20 miles.

actually the term gun and rifle in artillary mean eactly the same, and technically it also means exactly the samething in anykind of a firearm. Has all todo with the trajectory (or path) the round travels in. There are three basic trajectories: a mortar, howitzer, and a rifle or gun (both terms are often used interchangablly). In otherwords a bullet (size dosn't mean squat) that has an extremely high arc in it's trajectory is known as a mortar. A howitzer has much less of an arc in flight. A rifle or gun shoots a much flatter arc than the other two. To further confuse this, an M107 SPG used a 175mm round, and was called out as a one seven five gun, but it's trajectory put it right there with a 16" rifle (if you dig deep you'll find the 16" rifle termed as a gun and a rifle). To even further confuse this, an 8" or 16" rifle onboard a capital ship, and shooting at near max range has a trajectory that also falls into the same brackets that a howitzer does. But of course does this with more range

The Wisconsin was on the same pier as my ship (spruance class destroyer) in Norfolk, VA. Served from 98-02. It was pretty impressive seeing the complete armament of that ship up close. Especially the 3 triple 16 turrets.

US Navy's largest cannon aboard ships in commision today is the 5", unless they came up with something new recently. Our 5" cannons with standard rounds had an effective range of 10 miles. But we also had "rocket propelled" 5" cannon rounds that had an effective range of 60 miles. That's a long flight for a bullet ;)

60 miles? If the ship were moving it would be in the next zip code before the round hit the target.

The video was cute, but since when is it " I" don't know ?? When I went through MCRD SAnDiego, if you mistalenly said " I", the DI"s response was," Are you a F---king private eye?" 50 pushupsA**hole !!!

And our Tomahawk missiles have a range of 1000 miles. Oh yeah, we could really reach out and touch someone ;)

There was no New Jersey Class Battleships. The New Jersey was one of the 4 Iowa Class Battleships. The class is named after the first ship in the class. The Iowa Class Battleships were the Iowa BB61, New Jersey BB62, Missouri BB63 and Wisconsin BB64.

that and their sixth grade education! What I told is taught in just about every arty school on this planet. I might also add here that virtually all main guns on any capital ship are listed as rifles due to their trajectory. Dig out your Websters Dictionary

an M107 shooting at sea level on a target at the same level will go an honest 23 miles (depends on who you ask), but shoot from a hill top that is elevated to about 1500 feet above sea level will give you close to 27 miles if the target is at sea level. The problem is that like their 16" cousins, they are not all that accurate. The same platform (M107/M110) with an 8" howitzer barrel will hit a garbage can lid round after round at 9 miles from a position on hard packed clay. The 175mm round the M107 shot was a scaled down clone of the old Hornaday secant ogive bullet, except that it predates that bullet by several years. The powder charge is about 12" in diamter and 5'7" long (zone 3), and a serious handfull to hand up to the loader. It's primer tube is about two feet long!

I'm one of the few folks on this planet that has called in strikes from an Iowa class ship, and is still alive. I did it in the fall of 1968 near Tam Key.
