Groves

In the 22 CM how many groves should I get when ordering a barrel ? I really don’t understand this groves thing why different amount of groves for different calibers ? Or is that wrong someone please explain this grove thing .

Arguably, 4 lands and grooves is the most popular. With that said, there are 3&5 groove rifling as well as several different land shapes. I would advise contacting a barrel mfg. and discuss with them.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Ok guys thanks I just write sometimes and don’t spell check I’m bad .

Personally I'm partial to the 3G in 17, 20 and 22's. I know some 6mm 3G that shoot well too.
I was reading somewhere that a 3 groove you get better barrel life because it disperses heat better don’t know if that’s true or not just what I read .

Performance is a close call and more related to the over all barrel quality, metallurgy, and reamer design.

Life is another debate, that is very dependent on heat from rapid strings.

I would worry less about it and use the mentality that barrels are consumables. Have the rotation in the pipeline and go shoot. Life is too short to agonize over it and let that block you from living.

Thanks you are correct life is too short just have to keep the barrels coming .

For my 6mm, I like a standard 4 groove. For my 7mm and .308 I prefer a 5 groove canted land. The rational that makes sense to me is a land pushing against a groove. I think they clean easier, but that's just me. As far as round count life, I shoot them until they quit shooting, then I replace them, just like tires on a race car.
