groundhogs still out there

I have been seeing them all through deer season here too. Much later than normal. I was thinking that maybe they can sense a cold winter and are feeding later in the year to put on extra fat?

Weird year. We had over a foot of snow a couple of weeks ago and I saw several striped gophers scampering around in the snow. I have never seen any around here after the first really hard frost.

Told my Dad when I got a job I was never eating another..stuck to it..
So obviously you don't agree that they are great table fare. Had my first ground hog in 1983 after shooting one in October during the bow season. I always shot ground hogs with rifles in pastures down in West Virginia but never considered eating one in the hot summer months. When I shot this one, being the fall and most things I kill in the fall, I eat, I tried him. It was surprisingly like eating stringy roast beef. Great flavor. Haven't had one since. Haven't killed one in the fall since either, only in the spring or summer months.
