Groundhogs in the south?

Hi all I’m a varmint hunter up in the north east ny pa area just wondering how far south can we find woodchucks / groundhogs? Thanks

I live in North Alabama and we have groundhogs here. I used to hunt them some, but since the state legalized night hunting for coyotes and hogs, we've been having a blast hunting coyotes at night with thermal.

Hey I just moved to SC from PA a bit over a year ago and I ain't seen one single ground hog, whistle pig or pasture poodle since I got here. Was in Chester County in PA and them hogs was all over the place. Sometimes I was out hunting them as often as 3 evenings a week.
Yep, got divorced too.

I’m seeing more the last two years than I have in quite a few years. Most on the sides of roads and in kudzu piles. The places I used to hunt have been bought up and getting access around here is getting scarce too. Sure did have a lot of fun hunting them too. This is north of Chattanooga,TN

SE OK. (Broken Bow) seen one alive in my life.
found one dead in highway
friend killed one 30 yrs ago

must be at far edge of their range...probably too wet here???

While traveling thru Missouri today I saw at least 6 GH's on the interstate, victims of those rubber bullets. Also saw at least 6 deer along the side of the road as well. I've not seen any GH along the roads of TN in several years. Yotes probably got 'em.

I live in farm country in SW Virginia and see very few ground hogs. Most say the coyotes get them first.

When I lived in southern VA, we had groundhogs. Even when they were thick in WV, I never noticed many in SW Virginia. Now the coyotes have thinned them out in WV.

We hunt them hard here in the south. They know they are safe along the roads though. Heaviest concentration of them I ever saw was a 300 acre farm in Boonsboro MD back in the early 80's.

NE Oklahoma, seeing more and more every year. Two so far this spring. Several years ago one was in a sapling. Seemed odd. Even more odd when a bobcat was witnessed leaping and locking on to that groundhog. He gone. (Groundhog)

I live in town and had one living in the open field across from my house. Haven't seen him in a few years though. I guess the coyotes got him.

Saw one just a bit East of Atlanta, Ga. couple years ago. When I go north to Maggie Valley and North Carolina, I look for them all the time. Each sighting brings back memories of fun times growing up in Pa.

The problem with the south is the ground itself is too sandy and will collapse if critter attempts tunneling.

that makes sense. mostly sandy loam here. we have a high water table too...idk if it matters.
crawdads do great here!

I'm in south central ky. When I was a kid, it was easy to kill a half dozen or more groundhogs in a decent afternoon, overlooking hay fields. Now, seeing one is pretty rare and they are usually under old barns, etc, for safety. Their demise around here coincided with coyotes moving in. I can only speculate that coyotes have all but eradicated them around here. Another factor is the lack of good hay fields, too. Nobody handles good quality square baled hay any more and most just roll grass hay. So, very few alfalfa fields around any more. It was nothing to ride around and kill several on a Sunday afternoon in the 80's.

More opossum on half shell here than groundhogs In my area anymore. Still a few square bale guys around ( we still square bale the farm) but not many groundhogs. Like others say, the old days we had several around.
