Ground Hog Match Course of fire

For those of us who haven't had the pleasure, what's your course of fire.
It sounds like you could hold one on a Silhouette range, berms are at 200, 300, 400 and 500 meters. If that's the case, there are a lot of Silhouette ranges around that only get used once or twice a month.
Do you have different classes for people shooting from a rest and another one for prone.

Jerry: Those are the distances being fired at one of our benchrest g'hog matches, since it also is primarily a long range rifle silhouette range. Ten ring at 2 & 300 is 1". At 4 & 500 it's 2". 20 minutes to fire 6 shots at each target, high 5 count for score. The club allows a sight-in session 8 am 'til the 9 am starting time since most of our ranges where other matches are held have the tgts. at yardage distances. A smaller coyote tgt at 2 & 300 and a standing g'hog at 4 & 500. No seperate classes for off the bench or prone, only saw one competitor firing off the ground with a bi-pod & he never returned. Custom, Factory & Hunter classes. Few limits on bench equipment, almost anything goes, except one piece rests. Spotting scopes permitted.

Jerry,

This is basically how it goes.

The groundhog shoots are contested at three different distances. Depending on the range it might be anywhere from 100 to 500 yards. I have shot at a groundhog match out to 600 yards before but only on the best days can you see your shots, so it’s not very practical.
At a groundhog shoot you try and spot each shot and improve on the next. We shoot for score, but some shoots may award for the smallest group as an extra.

We take turns shooting the three distances. Then add up the scores at the end of the day. Ties breakers are broken differently from club to club. All of the shoots are shooting from a bench that I know of except for one.

There are two different types of shoots.

The first is a non-sighter shoot as Hickory and Southfork shoot. These are the oldest and longest standing shoots. At those shoots your relay will come to the bench three times and simply shoot for score after an initial fouler.

The second type is to have sighter targets that you can shoot along side your score target. This is shot during the timed period and when your ready you shoot your five score shots on the score target. The times usually range form 6 min to 9 min for the far distance.

The most basic classes are Factory and Custom. Then depending on your turnout those are divided up by weights or other restrictions.

Usually around here it is $12.00 to $15.00 to enter and 50% percent of the money goes back to the shooters the rest is for the clubs.

Every shoot makes it’s own rules and they will vary slightly, so this was meant as a general idea.

Here's a couple links to groundhog shoots so you can check out the rules.

Thanks for the info. I like the sound of there not being any formalities. Any club with some open days in the schedule could develop some rules based on their own situation and conduct matches. I wonder if maybe you had a seperate class for bipods only, that you could attract a few shooters who didn't have proper bench equipment.

Hi Jerry,
I believe the Southfork groundhog shoot was originally shot from the prone position when it started 20 years go. It would be a neat twist to add a prone class.

some one mentioned hickory [Vale's ghs] it prone 1,3, 500yrds
