Ground hog in tree

Dogs treed a ground hog. 30 foot up. Tree didn't have much bark on it, but he sure got up
there quick. Looks like he was pretty content. Probably will wait till he's sure dogs are gone.

I've only seen it once, about 40 years ago, there lazy and if they have a choice they'll hit a hole before they climb. Dogs probably ended that choice!

Seen a couple in trees . Even shot one while glassing I had a feeling of being watched somehow I noticed a twitch and about 40-50 yard in front of me was a groundhog stretched out on a low branch. While looking at it it appeared to be staring back . I grabbed the rifle got the ghog in the scope and said bye bye . I've shot them on fence post , stumps sunning as well on log piles soaking up the sun and warmth.

my family’s childhood hound half beagle ,half coon hound would run them up a tree , into a hole ,back torn all to hell or alive. Smaller ones where brought back alive on a few occasions, big ones where always half shredded. One time which I will remember forever is when she ran one up an apple tree and she tries to climb up the tree for it and wedges her rib cage in the crotch of the tree. This left her back legs off the ground and fronts on the opposite uphill side of the crotch. She was yipping and hollering like I never heard. Woodchuck growling and hissing , left us wondering how to solve the problem. My dad just ran in and lifted the dog out of the crotch. Had to pull her back off the treed chuck and half drag her back to the house.
I clearly remember her treeing a few.

She did the same with raccoons as well.
Lucky was her name one awesome dog. We raised rabbits and chickens, she would mother over them naturally and keep the yard safe for them. Funny thing is she would mother over our hobby farm animals but was also a great rabbit and squirrel dog. And would stay right with us when hike in camping.
She passed away while I was away at an automotive tech school a couple of years after high school graduation. Never did get to say goodbye to her.

O.P.
while I thank you for stirring up my memories ,I’m also cussing you out for the onions I’m cutting as I type this out.

I’ve seen a few in trees over the years. I have shot a bunch of them sitting on top of wooden fence posts. That is my favorite shot to make.
I'm with you. I love shooting them off fence posts. I have seen several in trees but never shot at them, no backstop.

I've seen 4 that I can remember, all here on the farm. Our collie treed 2. Both dispatched while treed. I walked up behind the third. He was out on a limb, literally, maybe 10-12' high and at the time, was very interested in the interaction between a hawk and a bunch of crows. When he finally saw me behind him, he jumped out of the tree and found his hole.
Saw and shot and shot at quite a few off of fence posts, mostly in the mountains when I used to hunt out there.
For the last 2 years I've had a male that has a hole 63 yards from my basement door. He loves to sun on the stump above his home (yes, his name is Stumpy, the two youngest granddaughters ask about him often). I've also seen him climb a small, nearby hickory and prostrate himself on the same limb, maybe 8' AGL. Not regularly, maybe 5-6 times. Never a different tree, never a different limb. Before you ask, I consider him seed stock...

My grandfather and I were spot spraying weeds in a cornfield when the dog started raising a racket. We found him with a groundhog treed about 15 feet up. With no other way to get him down, he set the sprayer to a steady stream and took it out with a mixture of 2-4D & 2-4-5T, finishing him off with the hammer out of the tractor box.

Ghogs are quite the multi talented animals. The climb trees, burrow in the ground and can swim. The only thing they can't do is fly. I suspect it has something to do with the lift/drag ratio!

Howdy !

Hey... they can too fly !! They just need a little help !

I've shot them out of trees. Just consider where the bullet might terminate flight,
if the shot somehow becomes sub-optimal.
