Grooves in chamber

Wow i just did a chamber earlier today and i believe i have grooves length wise in the chamber about the whole distance of it. Its a cheap barrel with plenty of room to cut off so that part isnt a big deal. Im just trying to figure out how it happened so i dont do it again. At first i couldnt understand how it could happen. I think mabie as i was running the reamer in for each next pass the bottom flute drug inside the chamber. then with multipe passes this happened several times. reamer holder is a floating type that fits in tailstock taper. this may be a reason for me to go to a different style reamer holder. Ill try to put some borescope pics up later today if i can figure out how to get them on here.
Or Mabie there is just some streaks on the mirror of the borescope Its buggin me so im going down there right now to check a little more. Thanks

update-- the grooves are almost like streaks and they are equidistant apart so its like they are a mirror of the reamer flutes. heres a pic in the end if chamber - you can see the start of one-- can anybody give me an idea wat happened here

Maybe you stopped the machine too soon while the reamer was cutting and didn't allow the reamer to dwell for a second. I get a faint superficial line here and there and from the reamer in a tight chamber. Cross hatch 320 and it's gone.

You might as well cut it off an start over it doesn't look like an easy fix from the picture.
Looks to me it won't polish out so I would back up an punt as they say,I got confidence in ya.

Thanks Stan-- I dont mind cuttinq it off and doing it over at all. Id just like to try to figure out what caused it so i could avoid a repeat preformance.

Didn't let it spark off like Chuck said. Do like Stan said or set it back .015. It shouldn't take much to clean up.

Didn't let it spark off like Chuck said. Do like Stan said or set it back .015. It shouldn't take much to clean up.

Hi Hog-- Most of my passes i backed the reamer out before i shut the machine down . i would take whatever i planned, then back off the tailstock handwheel. then shut the lathe off. should i do it another way? Thanks

That is a form of chatter. It needs to be cut clean by using the standard technique of packing the reamer flutes with grease or wrapping with wax paper. Then either turn the reamer by hand or turn the chuck by hand carefully until it cleans up. 5R or ratchet rifling can contribute to this happening, especially if you pre-bore. If you cut the entire chamber off and rechamber using the same set up it may happen again. George Kelbly has put out some helpful information about this.

I use a flush system with a Manson holder now- but before I changed over I used a pusher, and experimented with a couple types.
One was a pusher with a ball bearing on the end of the reamer holder. I got exactly the type of chatter you're getting.
Switched to a flat-on-flat pusher, and the problem went away.

Are you using a commercial floating holder?

Thats interesting-- i am using a commercial reamer holder and it is a flat on flat type. The floating end seems kind of heavy but I know alot of people are using this reamer holder successfully and I have before. Ill keep experimenting- thats all part of the fun to me- Thanks much for your Help

I really like my JGS. I used to push and hold reamer on a handle. JGS makes a nice tight chamber and keeps my hands free. Worth a look...

Thanks Chuck-- I did look at that on their page. Now that u mention it ill give it some more consideration.
