Hello all. I am in need of some advise as to what the best option is for a grind to fit recoil pad to install on a Remington 700 Classic stock that I need to shorten about an inch. I have researched brands and sizes and what I came up with is if they are close width wise they are way to long length wise and vice versa. A Pacmeyr small is about the closest I can find but I still need to shorten it about 3/4" and don't want to get into the metal insert of the pad. What pads work well for you when shortening a stock? Tha ks for the info.

Give Brownells a call, and talk to one of their techs. They should be able to recommend a correct sized pad for you.

Somewhere at my office I have some of the Pachmayr metal inserts that I used for sizing. I'll try to locate them and post some specs if nobody beats me to it.

ETA: disregard that last post. Pachmayr has printable templates... https://www.lymanproducts.com/media/user/file/r/e/recoil_pad_templates_3.pdf

A medium should be all you need for that stock. Just make sure you fit it square and centered so that you have about the same overhang on the sides and you shouldn't run into any metal. I usually only give myself about an 1/8" overhang on the back/comb side to leave enough room to shape at the toe to get the angle right. That being said a .80" Pachmayr Decelerator 750 pad is my favorite and will work for about 90% of most factory rifles. It grinds nice, works well and isn't sticky like a Limbsaver. I use the Miles Gilbert pad fixture from Midway, it's worth the money. One simple slip and you will be buying another pad to try again. Rough fit with a belt or disc sander and do your final fit by hand with a sanding block and paper. Spray a little Ballistol on your belt for a nicer smoother finish. Wear eye protection and be prepared for a shower when you're done. That rubber gets everywhere.
