Green mountain barrel blanks

I have a close friend who wants me to chamber up a couple green mountain chrome moly 22cal barrel blanks for his varmint rifle. These barrel blanks are 100 bucks a piece so I am not expecting to much. I am curious to know if anyone else has shot any of these? I know their rimfire barrels have a nice following. any info would be kind. Lee

I have no personal experience with them but can relay what I have learned from a local shooter that uses only Green Mtn barrels. First he his a good shot and not only threads and reams his own barrels but of course reloads for them. He swears by them and has them on every gun he owns. He claims that they are the equal to much more expensive barrels. His 2 cents.

They are a decent drilled, reamed, pull-buttoned barrel. Heat stress relieved after rifling as they should be. If you get the un-contoured blanks, cast a lap in them and lap them out after you contour them and there's not much difference between that and a Shilen, PAC nor or hart. I've used several for different projects and they have shot well. They borescope nicer than some of the Douglas barrels I've seen recently.

Got one on a Contender in .30-30AI because I requested a 12tw. Shoots and bore scopes well. It's not a brand you see on the Leader Board but for hunting at my/it's effective ranges....JMHO

Picked up a couple of 20 caliber blanks for my 20 VT and "short" project. Couldn't go wrong for that price? Turned out to shoot bug holes and clean up as smooth as silk. Lapped? Can get any better than what I ended up with. Just as good as any of my Shilens or Pac Nors.
Also ordered up a couple of 17s that are getting chambered in 17 VHA. For the delivery time and the price, no way can you go wrong.

You will be pleasantly supprise how they shoot don't let the price fool you. I will not spend 300$+ on a varment or hunting barrel again

You will be supriseD , they are excellent , I have threaded chambered ,installed 50+ and only one manufact mess up . I would not lap I borescope every one tht comes in . If you get one of ther 41v50 barrels , do some home work on how to turn for best results .

Lap it? IMHO, shoot it first. Your target will show you. Forget the bore scope. You may not like what you see but your target will tell you different. ;)
Had folks tell me that a "non" lapped barrel was junk. Had it chambered anyway and it turned out to be one of my best shooters.
At least, that's what the target says! 8)

I hear what your saying, but lapping has more to do with copper fouling than accuracy. If your bore fills up with copper then your accuracy will suffer. Button rifled barrels will generally always benefit from lapping. Lee

I installed quite a few Green Mt barrels. 1. they are not Br quality barrels. 2. they will shoot 1/2" in good accuracy cartridges. 3. I wish they would supply them already tapered. would make it easier and less expensive for customer.
4. I have not had any complaints from anyone that I chambered a G.M. barrel for.
If you want a 1/4 minute barrel spend 3-400$ for a blank, if your looking for a good working tool. G.M. will fill the bill.
Skeet, I don't think these barrels would benefit from lapping. there a little on the big side to start with , and they are good looking barrels for there purpose. They are not a bbl to take to the SS. Ken

Exactly. I use them for carry rifles, AR builds ect. They shoot as well as a guy can hold off sticks in the field. When I build a BR setup for precision varminting, I move up to the custom makers, but nothing wrong with a GM on a yote rifle.

You might want to check out X-Caliber barrels in Kalispell Mt. You can get them contoured and handlapped for about the same price as a G mtn. Barrel after its contoured. Ive heard pretty good things about them but no personal exsperience.

I have used Green Mountain Stainless blanks on 4 rifle builds over the last 2 years, they have all exceeded expectations in the accuracy department for the cost involved. My typical results have been 1/2" or better with the Green Mountain barrels chambered in 20 tac and 5/35smc. My only hangup on these barrels is that they give up some velocity when compared to other manufacturers and they also foul more than a lapped barrel. As L. Sherm mentioned i would also recommend checking out X-Caliber barrels. While i don't have any experience with them yet i have a few barrels on order and will be testing them out shortly. They do cost a little more than the GM barrels but they are hand lapped. Just my opinion for whats its worth.

Can't speak for their centerfire barrels. But I have one of theirs 10/22 drop in barrels and it shoots lights out.

I just looked at x-caliber barrels and a SS match grade barrel in a sporter contour is $355! I can buy ANY other barrel for less than that........

Give them a call, i bet you will find that they sell the barrels for less than they have listed on the web site. Keep in mind they are a new company looking to gain market share.

Shot PDs with two guys shooting GM barrels. One shot a .20-222 and hit everything he aimed at. The other couldn't hit a polar bear from 5 feet out. Maybe it was the barrel, maybe it was the shooter. Who knows. I do remember them spending more time cleaning their barrels than most people spend watching a movie. YMMV
