Great Idea

Chuck, while a lot of long-range BR shooters may not have the time or inclination to do much rimfire work, I found a direct correlation between time spent at 50 yards working with my 22LR and my 6BR scores at 600 yards in club Varmint Silhouette matchse. My hold became more steady, trigger control was better, I acquired the sight picture faster, and my mental focus from shot to shot was better.

There are some exciting things happening in the rimfire world, not the least of which is the 17 Mach 2. While it has been overshadowed by its bigger 17 HMR brother, it is much less expensive,$4.39/box at Grafs.com), and if you're shooting from 50-100 meters, it does the job very well.

There are issues with the currently available ammo, which we will explain when the 17 Mach 2 article comes out. Basically, the ammo hasn't been tested in the crucible of competition and the ammo-makers need to tighten up the quality control. But I think that will happen as more people try the 17 rimfires and start to use them in accurized rifles.

I've also found that, with the exception of the rimfire board on Benchrest Central, and German Salazar's excellent Shooters' Journal Delphi Forum, there aren't as many sources for good rimfire accuracy information on the internet as you would think. Hopefully we can all teach each other a few things in our new Forum.

I second the great idea.

I've been shooting F class with 6BR for a few years and never shot .22LR for competition, just plinking and squirrels. I just bought an Anschutz to practice, lots, to work on the little things that can make me a better shooter. I found a correlation between 50 meters and 300 meters, already. I've only had the rifle 10 days and have had it at the range three times. My 6BR is a stock,no pun intended) varmint version from Savage which tracks well on a rest but has no adjustments. I put on a cheek piece to raise my head to scope level. The stock is "ambidextrous" meaning it's not good for either left or right. It's a right hand action but I've switched to left hand. The Anschutz is a real left hand action and aluminum stock with lots of adjustments, just more things to tinker with). I hope to get the stock to fit me, rather than the other way around. My plan to determine what kind of stock adjustments make sense to do on my Savage once I figure them out on the "Erector set" Anschutz stock. And, just for kicks, I also have iron sights,as well as a scope) for the thing and have, for the first time since military service with an M1 Garand, shot with them AND I hit the paper.

It is turning out that in addition to the junior shooters we have in the club, a number of our senior shooters are going back to the 22LR and we are starting up an adult rimfire division with its own director.

The rimfires are every bit as challenging, much cheaper to shoot,I don't think I'll need to replace the barrel after 2,000-3,000 rounds, either) and easier to clean.

I credit my 6BR shooting improvements to this forum and the practice of the techniques the members have provided. I am hoping that this same quality will come to the rimfire forum.

Don't forget Rimfire Central. Always room for another one, however.
