Gray Lyman 55

I just picked up a gray Lyman 55 in mint shape and in the original box with all the paperwork. It was packaged in 1972 according to what was in the box. It looks like a really nice measure and feels super smooth. From what I have been told, the older Lyman measure are still considered tops, is this one old enough to qualify? Any tips, tricks, techniques, or upgrades? Thanks, Glenn.

Hi Glenn,
I have one just like you describe ; does very well with coarse stick powder.
Keep the 3 sections lined up as close as possible to each other for more consistent throws.

Thanks fellas. I took it to the range the past two days and so far I am liking it, but really need to sit down and practice adjusting and throwing charges.

Homer built my Culver measure on one of those Grays (about 1973). I treasure it. Those Lymans with the OEM Lyman drum were about as good as you could get with the IMR stick type powders (Homer said that in that respect, his drum wouldn't be much different than the OEM Lyman drum), the deal with the Culver drum was that it was quicker to get to your desired weight, and dead repeatable with that powder lot once you found the setting and wrote it down, plus the Culver conversion came with a Xerox sheet of recommended "starter" settings for the commonly used powders of the day, which got you either spot on or very close on your first try. Had I not had access to the Culver conversion to spoil me on easily repeatable settings, I would have been happy with the OEM drum. They're good measures.
