My Uppy/Downy got a workout yesterday at our ARA match. I've been shooting over it for almost 2 years and couldn't imagine shooting without it.

Are those vertical at times? (Weight down).

They are balanced horizontally so they pick up an up draft or down draft. They also can only go up or down so far by design.
