Gracey Power Neck Shaver

Have a couple Gracey neck shavers but now I neck turn with a Sinclair set up and a drill.

The Gracey case trimmers are great, but for turning necks accurately I'd recommend something else.

I have one, and it took some experimenting to get it to work well. The main fix is to replace the mandrel; the Gracey mandrel is too small, so the case tends to rattle and chatter. It's a fortunate coincidence that Sinclair sizing and neck turning mandrels fit the shaver and fit the case neck much better. The inside and outside of the case neck must be lubricated,I use Imperial) or else the cutters and mandrel will wear quickly. The shaver runs much smoother if it's set to do a 100% cleanup.

The hardest part is getting a feel for adjusting the cutters, as all 3 must be set to the same diameter. You'll ruin a handful as you experiment, but now I can get it done from scratch with only two cases spoiled. Even with lubrication, the cutters wear, they're surface-hardened steel) and must be adjusted periodically. You'll have to monitor the neck thickness and decide how much variation is acceptable.

The Gracey Neck Shaver is a great tool for turning out a large number of pretty good cases, but isn't really suitable for turning out a few good cases. The biggest limitation is the cutters, and it would be great if somebody came up with carbide replacements; however, the market is small so the cost would be high to cover development and setup costs. The bottom line is that this isn't a tool for benchrest competitors, but it's great for Highpower shooters, prairie dog shooters, etc. who need a lot of pretty good brass.
