Got my new 284!!

My new 284 arrived last week and I got it bedded and put back togeather by the weekend. I built it on a Remington short action and bedded it into a 40X kevelar McMillan stock and made a single shot out of it.

I went with a Broughton 1-9 5c and it was supposed to be 28" but came home at 27"s. I loaded up some 162AMAXs and some 175MKs with H4350, Rl-17 and H4831. When I had the rifle buit I wanted the shorter barrel so decided to have it throated for the 162AMAXs instead of the 180s because I didn't figure I would get the velocity out of the 180s to take advantage of the BC difference.

It clearly likes the AMAX and does NOT like the 175s. It also liked the 4350 and didn't seem to care for the RL-17. The three loads of H4350 @ 51.5,52 and 52.5 all shot .5 @100yds.

I cleaned it twice while load testing and got zero copper fouling!! All I would get was some black powder fouling on my patches. I have never had a new barrel do this. I would always get some blue for the first 10 to 15 rounds. Has anyone else found this with a new barrel?? Thanks guys!!

You'll probably get some responses like this: "you don't truly know until you look at it through a bore scope."

my thoughts... If it hammers, then keep doing what you're doing, and simply read the patches as you clean each session.

It's happening to me as we speak lol. My new Shilen select match .223 barrel is still shiny with no fouling after 100rds, shoots amazing. Many 10 shot groups in the .2's and .3's at 100 yards. All I get is some powder fouling as well, but not the usual where you may see a couple of little dots (maybe unburned powder), the bore is just as smooth and clean. I'm using N150, and until now, I haven't seen this happen with other powders I've tried.

I always wanted to try a .284 and you helped me make up my mind.Sounds like you have a hummer. Keep us updated on your shooting results with this rifle. It is interesting to follow good results.

Yes, my last 2 Broughton 284s showed zero copper during running in. Very different to the barrel I,m running in at the moment, a real copper mine.
These were all checked with a borescope.
