Got drawn for elk!! :)

Big Congrats!
What bullet will you be using? Scope? Sticks? Binos?
I would advise to practice different shooting positions as much as you can. Dry fire as much as you can.
I spent all kinds of $$ on my first elk hunt in the early nineties. Im still using most everything i purchased back then. Binos, spotting scope, rifle, etc.

Get in shape is the best advice I can give you. Load up your packframe with cinder blocks, or rocks, and start climbing hills or football stadium stands (yes, you will get funny looks!).

Getting them on the ground is one thing; packing them out can be "fun"....

Does that mean you will be shooting from a long way off or are you keeping your shots under 100 yds in the taller stuff ? That's going to be a lot of carrying meat in most places.

Well for me if I can help it my shots will be inside 200 yards. Im not one of those guys to try at 600 or out. Maybe if I had more experience. Ive killed whitetail out around 6-700 yards but I would never forgive myself if I wounded an elk.

start scouting out the unit now. first, you'll get an idea of the terrain / animal activity / movement patterns + you'll get in better shape.

if that wasn't enough, you'll at least get some fresh air!

Finally got drawn! Hunting unit 22 in Az. My first elk hunt. Im taking a 7mm rem mag. Any tips or advice?
Best area is going to be in the north quadrant of the unit by Payson. Get a topo map and check the roads up there as soon as you can this spring. There's also a lot of recent private roads and private property so the most recent history would be of significance. There is steep country up there so good physical condition is demanded. Shot's can be long but good decisions on taking any game that is irretrievable is advised. Good luck!

don't mean to hijack this thread but I have done a lot of research about best bullet placement for bears and I have always been wondering if there is a preferable bullet placement for elks and deer? I think this could also be a learning opportunity for the OP.

Don't get to far from road access. Pack horses or 4 wheeler if possible. You don't want to back pack a load of meat up hill for a mile.
