Got a scope ring question

potatoe

Silver $$ Contributor
I have NF rings and a picatinny rail and want to know is there a rule to follow when attaching the rings to the rail. There is some slop when the rings are through the slots and I want to know should I have the rings pushed forward (toward muzzle) , backwards (buttstock) or middle? Does it matter if so why.

Thanks!

I push the rings towards the muzzle and then tighten down. When the rifle is fired it recoils to the back towards you pushing the scope forward. This way the rings cannot move if they are already moved as far forward as they can go. Ray

For what it is worth I concur. This is obvious to folks familiar with the old Unertil scopes and consistent with the instructions with Waren(sp?) Rings, a reputable company.

Agreed. Towards the muzzle. Just make sure you push and hold them in the CENTER of the ring with your finger to avoid any twisting of the rings. Could also use fore finger and thumb on either side of the ring to hold it forward as you tighten.

OK, I'm a little dense. If you push the scope rings to the front, why does one push the barreled action to the rear? Recoil lugs are bedded against the back side. Please help me out with this.

Think about it.. The recoil lug is part of the barrel assembly and yes it will move back, with the barrel assembly. The scope ring however is not part of the assembly and is not solid. So the barrel's inertia causes the barrel assembly to move back under the scope rings. The rings are trying to stay in place. Yes they move but the barrel is moving rearward under the ring.. Thus put the ring to the front.

Remember what Isaac Newton taught us. "A body at rest stays at rest, and a body in motion stays in motion, unless acted on by an external force; inertia is the direct result."

Also a good practice to hold the scope base forward towards the muzzle when tightening the mounting screws because the holes in the base may have a little play in them depending on the quality of the base.
