Good Ballistics Program?

searcher

I'm looking for a new ballistics program (had Sierra - but lost that older version in a computer melt-down) and hoped you folks could make comment on what is considered an easy-to-use ballistics program, preferably one which names specific bullets. I was thinking about going and purchasing the Sierrra updated program - but am interested in looking at other worthwhile programs as well. I mainly use them for wind drift projections and comparing external ballistics on specific bullets. Any input is appreciated!

I use Nikon Spot On which has info on bullets. I also like Hornady's Ballistic Calculator but with this one you'll need to know your BC, Velocity and Grains of bullet.

JB Ballistics is a free on-line program with a comprehensive bullet data base, with multiple options to provide very simplified or more comprehensive output. It's probably the most widely used program. I have compared a number of others and from what I have seen the results are virtually identical, and preference boils down to which is easier and suits your style.

I will be using this on Windows 10 platform

If you have an Android smart phone, consider Exterior Ballistics calculator for Androïd. It's cheap, has plenty of built in bullet data and the capability to add your own as well as include your own hand load data.

It can show you a data display as well as graphic sight pictures with your particular brand of reticle over any target your specify. I use mine at the range as well as at home, so having it on my phone is much better than just on my computer. Something for you to think about anyway.

JB works great and is spot on my Shooters ap on my phone. I've used Knights on my phone also and it worked fine but I use and like Shooters more than any of the others I've tried.

JBM is quite good and free online with a lot of tools and up to date bullet library. If you want a more complete and robust program Applied Ballistics Analytics package or for a different solver Patagonia Ballistics, both are very accurate and have very interesting tools built in like AB's WEZ and the wind angles part of the program. Patagonia is loaded, BC calculator based on bullet measurements, you can run a number of tracts against each other on the same screen.

I will be looking at these various programs I can run on my computer. Thanks for all the great info!

Has anyone used Stralok?

Yup it is fine, there deal is they offer almost every reticle by nearly every scope manufacturer. But it won't deliver as accurate ballistic solution as the AB program. It boils down to what you want.

Many good programs but the bottom line is to shoot at a target at the longest typical distance you will shoot at to verify and fine tune it.

hornady ballistic calculator is free and very easy to use. i'used this program for 12 yeara and have killed ghogs at ranges of 523 and 646 yds and the printed moa of elevation was dead on. too many hits at 200-400 yds to count and all poa was poi,

A program that mentions specific bullets is easy to use, no doubt. But more doubtful is the quality of ballistic coefficients associated with each bullet. My impression is that often the marketing people have the last say, not the technicians.

Picking bullets from a list is nice, but the data may be not as good as expected. I strongly recommend to use a program that allows G7 ballistic coefficients. G1 simply does not fit modern slender bullets.

If you have the extra money i would buy the G7 rangefinder it is awesome and super accurate it makes long range shooting a lot easier. But you still have to put your time in practicing and you will have to tweak your velocity and BC a little till you get them close. That's where a real good chronograph will help. (Aim small miss small)
