Go and no-go gauge interchangeability

I'm putting together a 17 Remington Fireball on a Savage action and would like to know if I can use my 221 Fireball gauges to set the barrel?

Ron

The only reason is some of the bigger caliber hs gages will hit the bore before they hit the shoulder if the end flat isnt small enough. Happens alot on some 17 and 20 cal overbore wildcats

I never use go no-go gages. I load all of my own ammo so I set my head space on my reloads. Save money and I know the head space is correct for the ammo used.

The shoulder on the 17 Fireball has a 30 degree shoulder. The 221 Fireball has a 23 degree shoulder. I know; I have heard reloaders talk about the Ackley Improved chamber and the no-go gage is the gage to use. I say fantastic!

The angle of the 30/06 shoulder is 17 degree 30 minutes and the Ackley Improved version has a shoulder angle of 40 degree. For the gage to work the diameter of the head space gage would have to be .375” in diameter.

the no-go gage is the gage to use.

I believe you have it incorrect, the "GO guage" becomes the no go as the AI chamber is usually .004ish shorter than a standard chamber. So if your bolt closes on parent cartridge go guage it is too deep.

You stopped a little short on your quote. I started with "I have heard...". I finished with "I say fantastic". Did you not understand the part about the different shoulder angles and the part about the gage not being .375" in diameter?

GSXR, I search there site for the interchangeability chart but could not find it, and I do thank you for the info. All the other chatter about the 30-06 and Ackley Imp comments flew right over, but it's okay. LOL, maybe one day I'll reach that level....

I have a copy of the current listings. It should be accessible on their website.

Interchangeability of head space gages; if the shoulder angle is different and the length of the necks are different on the cases and the length of the head space gage is unknown and no one knows the datum diameter and if the diameter of the gage is not a factor or is unknown how can there be an interchangeability.

Even a hand me down shirt that is too large fits where it touches.

You need to set the correct headspace using gauges, then size your reloads correctly....
