glueing a drill & tap scope mount

I wanted to add drill and tap style scope rings to a rifle (these are simply screwed in). In addition to the screws, I was thinking I might glue the rings in place. I want to be able to remove the rings later on, so I am worried about using JB Weld. Any suggestions on a good glue?

Not exactly sure what it is you want to do, but I've successfully glued a receiver sight to an action while using it as the drill and tap guide. I used Crazy Glue. De-grease real well. A piece of wood, and a good whack with a hammer removed the sight and some acetone the remains of the Crazy Glue. FWIW I then oiled the receiver and installed the sight with a couple drops of Loc-tite.

A famous benchrest and now F class gunsmith told me that bluing needs to be removed for epoxy to form its best bond. He told me that he has glued bases by masking off the area and using a chemical blue remover to prepare the surfaces. For aluminum, another good source told me that hard anodizing is much better than uncoated aluminum because the usual oxide that quickly forms on aluminum significantly reduces the bond strength. I suppose that you could use wet and dry or something to remove the oxide immediately before gluing. I would prefer using a steel base on a steel action because of thermal expansion issues.

I glued a scope mount on a Mossberg 44US that was not drilled with Black Max from Loctite. It worked great, but that is a 22lr. That was five or six years ago and it still works great.

any epoxy can be released with an industrial heat gun at about 400 deg f.

no. I haven't used it. We have used Belzona products for some power plant applications. Expensive.
