Gibbs vs AI

I am looking to have either a 270 Gibbs/AI or 280 Gibbs/AI built off of my Ruger M77 action. For 600 yards and in, which would offer the "best" performance? I was leaning towards the AI simply due to the longer neck enabling me to chase the lands. I would be shooting 150-160 gr Wildcat RBBTs in the 270 and 162-180 gr bullets in the 280.

6.5-06 Gibbs/AI is not out of the question either. 135-150 class bullets. Would this offer even less drift?

I'd go ackely either way, and stay away from the .277" bore. America has an odd obsession with the .277" bore, peculiar given that 7mm/.284" gives you so many more better bullet options, especially for match shooting. With 7mm it's a win win; higher BC's, heavier bullets if you hunt, given your caliber choice, not really premier long range calibres, it sounds like you do). The '06 case is one the big end for sure with 6.5mm, it would give you spectacular ballistics, but poor barrel life quite likely and burn an unnecessary amount of powder in AI configuration.

the very best in 6.5 on 06 family are

6.5//270 AI with a longer neck than 06 and a closely no pain / neck turning

6.5/280 RCBS wich is closely the max on 06 family, lees sharp angle allow a better feeding than AI shoulder

Gibbs doesnt generate a great improved If you compare to AI respice specialy with now modern available powder

in 7 mm or in 270 I will go

270 AI
280 Rem AI

note 280 rem AI is very flexible specilay with a broader range of bullet weight and the now available 175 SMK

last point to check : carefully chech die avaibility, AI are OK from Redding or RCBS, Gibbs or RCBS imp dies are ????

6.5/270 AI can be reload with a 25/06 AI and a bushing or a 270 AI and a bushing

good shooting
