Getting seating depth perfect?

My seating depths vary a couple thou using my wilson seating die. I assume that is because of seater stem contact differences. I have looked at Bon greens tool to measure the bullets for this but don't wanna shell out the
cash right now. So I am thinking about seating all my rounds a couple thou
short and then adjusting the micrometer
for each bullet to get the desired seating
depth perfect.

Anyone else try this?

Are you sure you have the right stem? The one that comes standard with the Wilson seating die doesn't work for a lot of good bullets. They make another stem for VLD and similar bullets. Also your overal length wil vary because of small differences in bullet dimensions, even within the same lot.

The seating stem is fine, and you are correct the variances in the bullet demension at the seating stem contact point are the cause of my variances. I am not off by much I typically see about +or- .001 difference either dirrection.

I like to seat bullets about .005" longer than desired depth. Then I insert the Davidson base and appropriate nose piece on my caliper. Each is measured and set in a poly loading block, each line numbered 1-10 according to how many thou each needs to be lowered. With the Redding comp seater, its easy to hit the correct depth consistently. You can find the Davidson pieces in the Sinclair catalog.

I bet it won't make my groups bigger. For Fclass and high power probably a waste of
time. But for 600 IBS I think your ammo needs to be as perfect as possible.
