Getting into Service Rifle

Ive been thinking of getting into Service Rifle comps for Across the Course matches. Ive been shooting Fclass and have had a lot of fun with it. I have always like shooting open sights, and love the challenge.

The only thing is now, is I don't have any clue on what I need. Can I run a "Match Rifle" in ATC matches or is it Service Rifles only? What is a good rifle to start out with? Rock River NM? I would like to stay with a 223. If even a bolt gun or ar platform.

Any info I can get is helpful. Any websites ect.

You can shoot a match rifle ATC, but in a different classification. Match Rifle and Service Rifle are same course of fire, different categories.

I had a RR NM and it served me quite well. A box stock rifle is all you need up to Master class IMO.

ETA: A match rifle is anything that falls outside of the Service Rifle restrictions, and no "match rifle" category for CMP matches.

josh,
if you are interested in shooting "service rifle" XTC there are some strict rules to be included in that category. Look up DCM legal models of ar 15s if you want to shoot .223 the other choices are the m1 garand in .30-06 or .308 and the M1a/M14. Both of the .30 cal guys still have some specific rules that must be followed to stay in service rifle category. As civil82 said, anything that is not service rifle goes to match rifle class. If you are interested in becoming "distinguished" you will want to shoot service rifle in Excellence In Competition matches run by CMP. Hope this helps and best of luck on your journey...
cheers,
Doc

Josh,

The US Rifle team website is probably the best resource for Highpower on the web.

As to your other questions. You can typically shoot a match rifle in NRA matches if the specific match program allows it. You can't shoot a match rifle in a CMP EIC match. The RRA NM is a good platform to start with. If you can do it getting a quality lower, and a WOA upper is probably a better alternative.

Be careful Josh... shooting across the course is highly addictive. You may find F-class boring after you try ATC shooting. Don't say you weren't warned.

Josh,
As other have stated you can shoot either match or service rifle in these competitions with classifications for both. I shoot a match rifle myself.

You should probably attend a local match and watch to learn the ropes and what to expect for when you shoot. Talk to people and you would likely find somebody that may let you try their equipment to see how you like it.

As far as things you need, you can get by with just a rifle, ammo, and a spotting scope. If it's something you want to continue with I would strongly recommend a shooting jacket, glove and a matt, I would also recommend some kind of timer for at least the slow fire stages so you know your time remaining and don't have to rush.

If you already shoot F-class you're well aware of the benefits of reloading your own ammo, so expect to do that, but good luck getting components for the time being. They can be found but it takes some searching and good timing.

Welcome and have fun.

Jeff

When I got into it I ordered a rock river complete lower with 2 stage trigger, and a WOA service rifle upper. Couldnt be happier. About the same price as a RRA complete rifle, but a better sight and barrel.
