gas port modification for Rem700

In light of the daily bulletin about primer failure ( http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com...-rocket-another-reason-to-use-eye-protection/) I can't help but wonder if some actions like the Rem700 could be modified with a gas port somewhere on the side of the action or even into the bolt body to provide the means of re-directing gas in the event of a primer failure. Some actions that I have used such as the Gilkes-Ross and Barnard Model P have a gas port built into the action for this type of event.

Has anyone modified their actions to create a gas port for safety reasons?

Thanks,
-Trevor

3 rings of steel doesnt need a gas port. Imo.

Old 40X no receiver hole.
Rem 600 has a receiver hole.
Both have a hole in the bolt.

There already is one. The problem is the amount of pressure. You would need a hole the size of a dime, maybe bigger, by my figuring.

Here is a pic of a Barnard Mod P gas hole. Probably in the neighborhood of 1/10 or 2/10 of an inch wide. Seems like that should do the trick.

Maybe something like that size in the side of a Rem700 bolt body would be the path of least resistance for gas and create a safer situation?

Not only pressure, but volume of escaping gazes.
Problems are the tiny hole is positionned on the left, just in front of the shooter's face.
As for the bolt, entering gazes continue theit way to the rear which is open around the sear piece.
Blowbacks have often a devastating effect on and insidethe bolt.
IMHO, the best solution is to direct escaping gazes to the ejection port, a wide channel for them and opposite the shooter's face.
OK, this would blow away the extractor, but creati,ng the conditions of a blowback imply accepting its consequences....

That hole is on the right- opposite the shooters face. And in factory form the 700 is pretty good about not hitting the shooter with gases. A good reason to wear safety glasses though

Hmmm.......directing super hot gases into the magazine area? I’m kina thinkin that’s not a great idea?

Josh, I believe the idea revolved around a clean kill, and not limping away from the wreckage!! And no, I do not condone this in any way. Just seen a few pics on the net.:D:D:p

Hi Paul! How’s the hip?
I know you wouldn’t do that! It would interrupt a nice fluting job! I tend to visualize everything and think it thru. That one didn’t end well in my head. Maybe if the vent was aimed towards the bullets? Since I’m shooting a lot of single shot actions these days, would you pick left port or right port?:eek:o_O
Maybe still out the bottom thru a hole in the stock? Hmmm. I could waste a few hours on this one!

Josh,

Hip is doing quite well, thank you.:) Starting therapy today. Been walking since day one. Just sore at incision site is all. I have a great answer for you. Borden has just added a new extractor set up to their line of actions. Very similar to the HS Precision extractor. The best part is it is very robust and very safe. Physically pinned in place. Check it out for yourself. So, I am a big fan of RBLPRE if you are going custom. Or LBLPRE for the south paws. Great addition to a great line of actions. I have pestered Jim Borden on the phone many times. Straight shooter and very nice guy to deal with. Quality second to none and fitted and timed triggers. What's not to like!! Hope that helps a little. Thanks for asking Josh.:);)

Josh,

Drop Port is also a very cool option to consider. Just be sure and never use a Sako extractor with a drop port conversion on a left port (rh shooter). When in battery extractor is literally right in your face. No joking here. Reverse this scenario for a lefty. Very dangerous Imho. We have never had it so good as far as actions and barrels go. Go forth and spend money. Lmao!! Thank you Josh.:cool:

:):):)Hi Paul. Thanks for the Borden info! I meant left port/right port for the venting hole, in jest of course. I gotta say I’m liking my RB/LP/LE Panda these days.:D
