G10 Pillars - Yes. Good.

@LVLAaron I believe you bought those ortoolworks extended jaws direct from ortoolworks? I don't see them on the website anymore which is why I ask. I did a quick search here on AS but haven't found the original discussion yet.

Yes. Their website(s) kinda suck. The jaws are here: https://www.visecleats.com/index.html

Despite the carter administration website, I got the jaws fast and communication was good. They're very nicely made. For what it's worth I found a similar set of aluminum jaws the same size on ebay for like 40 bucks - would be just as good for stock work.

Thanks! There we go, I was using the wrong website.

I made my own aluminum extended jaws for stocks but I've a need for some hardened with fixturing options and stops.

You'll like them a lot. I'm debating getting a second vice that's dedicated to them so I'm not swapping back and forth.

Curious about your means/methods...

I normally pillar bed (pillars installed when bedding), but when I don't I relieve the stock as needed for the epoxy before setting the pillars; they sit proud of the wood so that they finish out flush with the epoxy after bedding.

I notice yours are flush prior to bedding, you relieve material after installing the pillars?

@xr650rRider - I wont say fanboy, but I'm always open to new tool recommendations that make life easier.

@tobnpr - I bury the pillars. On these ebay m40 stocks - I install the pillars, and relieve 50 thou with a box cutter to make room for the bedding.

While G10 makes good pillars, my experience is that the technical upsides of it are really not in play when doing pillar bedding. A huge downside to me is the need for a seperate front eschutcheon.

With aluminum, all options are open for how to address the front eschutcheon. Or lack of ;)...which is my preferred approach.

Just my 2 cents worth.....

No eschutcheon needed for an m40

I go back and forth on eschutcheons - Sometimes I've just done a 7075 pillar and countersink it. But then I lose sleep thinking a eschutcheon would be better so the stock is sandwhiched between it and the action.

With a separate eschutcheon, we basically have a two piece pillar. I've done some that way but not by choice.

Good looking stock work!

It would seem the primary benefit of the G-10, over a cast, fiberglass reinforced pillar, would be reduced compressibility, since it is already compressed. Regarding escutcheons and pillars: the pillar is essentially part of the stock. The escutcheon is a means to transfer compression forces to the stock. If the escutcheon is glued in place, it becomes part of the stock. Whether or not this alters the function in any way, I can't say. WH
