Impact velocity on the 3/8" AR500 needs to be no higher than about 2,800 FPS. The 1/2" AR550 can handle another 100fps or so. You are safe at any reasonable range with all handgun calibers, but under no circumstances would I shoot them any closer than 30 ft. For cenerfire rifle I wouldn't put either any closer than 100 yards. People do it with carbines all of the time, but it's unsafe and I don't recommend it If you are shooting standard cartridges like .223, 308, 30-06, 6br, 6.5 x 47L, Creedmore, you should be safe with either at 200 yards. If pushing high sectional density bullets with magnum cases or light bullets super fast, push them back further (say 300 yards) or step up to the 1/2" 550.

Obviously, nogreen tip, or any other solid core / penetrator Ammo.
