funny reamer holder...

All this talk of reamer holders lately had me looking at ebay for things I don't need. I came across this Kennametal floating reamer holder. It seemed interesting because it has the usual parallel float, as well as angular.

They retail for 900-ish dollars, and was "unused, no box" for about 120 bucks. I figured I might as well give it a whirl.

USPS showed up today... and... it's a little bigger than I expected. I was laughing for several minutes.

Have a laugh at my expense. It might be useful if I ever do a BMG.

put a bicycle handle bar grip on it and go at it . It’s a floating reamer holder , wheres the switch that makes it float ( levitate) . Better get a leash on it when it floats .

I saw one used in another shop prior to buying my Haas. I got one, probably off eBay, anticipating using it. I never tried using it as I soon got my little tailstock rigged up on the tool post.

I use something very similar from Kennametal on my lathe. It had a solid straight shank on it so I turned it down to fit the taper in my tailstock. Up front it had a 1" collet and they didn't make any collets to fit the reamer shanks so I purchased an ER collet chuck so I can hang on to the tools without any slip fit adapters. It has been working really well for me and the chambers have been on size and true.

We used floating holders like that on automatic screw machines and turret lathes years ago, when machine tools such as these were in common use. (if you don't know what a screw machine is search "Acme Gridley" on ebay/utube. the only 'screws' we made were highly specialized types, and 10,000+ per order)

Believe it or not but this is a very good floating reamer holder. The very first one I used years ago to cut my first chamber. They also come as a number 2 or 3 Morse taper. Give it a go, you may be pleasantly surprised by the results. Keep us in the loop if you do.

I have a collet coming in a day or two for it, so I might.

It's got a 1.5 inch shank on it... I'll have to figure out a way to hold it. It's so heavy/stiff I can't imagine it actually "floating" something like a 223 reamer.

Anybody using the smaller Screw Machine floating holders? some of them are quite small.

They can be seen for sale on Ebay.

Cut it off and heli-arc a shank on and machine it square.

I am using a floating holder similar to a B&S, but it has no markings on it and I do not remember where I got it. Ebay 185879751484 is close to what mine looks like. Mine has ball bearings between the two parts. Tighten the two bolts and it won't float. Leave them a little loose and it floats great. The better the alignment is between the spindle and tailstock, the less float is needed.
