Fun with PCP air rifle this morning

One shot one kill on a yeller jacket(yes I said yeller) this morning that landed a on milk soaked paper towel. Bonus as I was after flies. Low right of cross hairs at about 28yds. I'm actually trying to attract flies but it seems they want to annoy me laying on the porch vs going to my target. I've tried steak blood smeared on paper, sugar soda, banana smear, vinegar (why not), hanging (as it is now), on ground, in shade, next to creek bit I'm not having much luck getting them on paper. I'd try honey but I'm out.

Try some sugar water, reduced Karo syrup

If you want more yellow jackets, try a small piece of meat.

Between dives I once watched a few yellow jackets cut and carry off pieces of lunchmeat off a discarded sandwich. Between the 5 or 6 of them, they probably took more than square inch of cold cuts.

I agree...sometimes it seems impossible to get the flies to do the fly thing. Yet when I go to the garbage can it seems like every time it is full of flies and maggots. I suggest a white garbage bag full of egg, refuse, plastic baggies of those bloody "napkins" found under cuts of steak or burger, some slimy leftovers, a bit of leftover fish. Bake in the sun in a can then set that out at 28 yards...downwind... tape a target on the bag and have at it.

Is it legal in your state to shoot flies over bait?

Because flies are not listed as game nor non- game critters, the baiting thereof is a grey area. It could be considered a means to propagate the species, since a single successful fly may lay thousands of eggs, while on the other hand killing a fly might mean you killed thousands. Tough moral conundrum.

Im going with shooting all you can...and if you get written up by a squirrel cop, you can be internet famous.
"I got fined for baiting flies!!"

The guys at work think I'm nuts but I think it really takes some trigger control which I hope transfers to powder burners.

I'm wondering just how much gun is enough to anchor them humanly. And what might be the ethical range for a given caliber/power range.
Can you reliably strike the kill zone, and deliver enough penetration to prevent "fly offs" with slow painful death?? jd

No I cannot. I cut one in half front to back and had to go use my shoe to dispatch it and took another's wing and had to do the same. Wonder if it is legal to dispatch with a .22 caliber pistol or not

I am wondering if to be sportsman like, the caliber should be reduced in relation to the size of the game taken? I mean, a 25 caliber and a fly is likened to an 8 inch artillery round to a bipedal primate. The results of a direct hit would be similar, I would think. I see room here to develop a VLD projectile made from, say a sewing needle? So many tech possibilities, so little time...

Fly shoots at distance are fun all right. But for house-clearing and CQB, I use a Windex mister filled with water. Spray the little buggers in mid-flight and they fall out of the air. Then..... STOMP! :D
