Full length sizing

I am new to reloading and have to ask about full length resizing,my equipment will arrive tomorrow.I have a 6.5 284 f class savage to shoot bench rest silloet from 850 to 1000 yds. I have brand new Papua brass and forester dies do I need to full length resize every time I reload these cartridges.THANKS

Reloading technique is up to the reloader, as long as you end up with safe and accurate rounds. I would think you could rechamber that case without the FL die coming into play after one firing, but if you load a little hot your chamber will dictate if it needs resizing when you try to rechamber the fired case.

I try to get a .001" to.002" shoulder bump back, and use a FL sizer every time . Take your time and think "safety" when reloading, if you don't know ...ask on this forum, someone will be happy to help out.

Read the article entitled: Basics - Resizing- Case Dimension Changes on the riflemansjournal.blogspot.com

I neck sized only for years and just recently changed over to full length neck sizer dies. Like that that has been mentioned, READ READ READ, ask questions if you are unsure, think safety, and pony up money cuz reloading gets expensive when you start chasing accuracy.

Go to the Lee website and read about LCD. Don't be put off by others comments it is a neat tool for your reloading box especially coupled with annealing.

Howdy !

IMHO -
If the fired cases wil fi the chamber w/ only shoulder " bump " & neck sizing, then......don't FL size
until you have to. Works for auto-loaders when ammo prepped in his manner feeds and chambers ok.

And, a lot of virgin brass ( I've recieved ) fits the chamber w/o needing FL sized.

“Neck sized cases will over the course of two or three firings; not only becoming quite tight in the chamber, but will do so to varying degrees leading to inconsistent bolt operation and inconsistent barrel harmonics. A fired case hits the inside of the chamber hard enough to initiate an element of the barrel's vibration pattern; do that inconsistently and your accuracy will suffer.”

So says “Germán A. Salazar” in this article:

I use neck dies only when the first firing or two leaves new brass still a bit short of completely filling the bolt face to shoulder datum length of that chamber. Once expanded enough that the case completely fills the chamber, thereon I’ll full length size with the die setup for minimal shoulder setback, just enough to maintain .001” to .002” clearance between bolt face and base of the case.

I have done both neck only and FL sizing on my first couple 6.5x284$. I went to FL sizing with a bushing exclusively for all my chamberings except 223 auto loaders, where I just use a NM FL sizer.

I have noticed zero reduction in accuracy and I have good ES/SD so I have no reason to neck size only.

The push for me to change was swapping over to sling shooting exclusively. Manipulation of the bolt from a sling needs to be easy and smooth or it adds to the fatigue, which will eventually cause me to "settle" for 10s. Some days I'm just a 10 shooter when I'm fresh. Add fatigue and 9s start popping up and that sb!t feeds on itself and can ruin a weekend.

You might find this article of some interest (if you haven't read it - a bit dated now, but I learned some things):
