full length resize or neck size only ?

This myth persists from the 60's - neck sizing produces longer case life and improved accuracy - not true.

Learn how to full length resize with a slight shoulder bump, (i.e. .001 to .002 bolt rifles) - you will have more reliable reloads functionality wise, no reduction in case life, and no loss in accuracy with quite potentially improved accuracy.

Which method is most used by bench rest shooters ?

Go to the Search box in the upper right hand corner of the page, type: "full length neck" (without the quotation marks), and read one or more of the 116 threads on this subject. This topic comes around every few months -- using the search function prevents wheel re-invention.

Or just accept Boyd's answer, which is correct.

Proper FL sizing is the hands down winner. It’s very important that this FL sizing be the right fit for the chamber.

In general theory neck sizing is a similar method because you’re letting the brass conform to the chamber. In practice this is less consistent and causes far more problems than well managed FL resizing.

If you read the current literature (e.g., Book of Rifle Accuracy by Boyer) you'll find that minimal full length sizing seems to be the best practice. The literature from ~30 years ago (e.g., Ultimate in Rifle Accuracy by Newick) tended to recommend neck sizing. Query whether age correlates with neck sizing?

On the other hand, you could be telling the myth.

Test runout......

Be danged if I can get neck sized cases anywhere near FL for straightness. There just isn't any body support?

I made a hybrid seater die awhile back that is basically an inline that threads into std press. IF,and that's a big one..... there was some reason I couldn't get a FL sizing die to do exactly what it's supposed to be doing.... I'd make a sizing die, with a sleeve, similar to a bushing die but it would be a two part system where there's full body support and while in the engaged position, a second op "neck sizes"....

But...... why? Only a cpl reasons, and they're pretty slim.Just not worth it for a cpl "tenths" potential in runout. Good luck with your project.

At some point, what is needed is some direct exposure to reality, rather than online discussion. Go to a short range group benchrest match, and watch people reload. Without interrupting their progress unduly, ask how they are sizing. They are all there doing the things that they believe will give them the best chance of doing well in or winning the match, based on their own experiences and observation of the top shooters. This is all known stuff that is not controversial.
