FTR Stock for Savage

I'm putting together a .308 on a Savage Model 12 Varmint action and would like a new stock. Without going custom or breaking the bank, what would be some good suggestions.

Thanks, Don Dunlap

Bell and Carlson Medalist- I have an adjustable model on my 700
Choate Tactical- a friend has one and it's nicer than I expected
HS Precision Pro Series- I have two of these, one with the vertical grip, one without. I really like both of them.

Have you checked out Stockade? I purchased one of his money saver Prarie dog tactical stocks and finished it myself. It was a fair amount of work, but I consider the shape of it to be the perfect F-T/R stock. He specializes in Savages.

jb,I have 1 rifle in a B&C Medalist and another in a A2 McMillan. I was wondering about a Choate Tactical stock, both models the 1 with adjustable cheek and buttpad and the 1 without. I hear they are heavy and I'm concerned about making weight. I have a 30 in Criterion Bull barrel coming and will be using my 12-42x56 NF BR scope. Not sure about the bipod yet.

ryanjay, I have not thought about 1 of Kevin Rayhill's stocks. I will go and check them out. I am not familar with the HS Precision Pro Series. If anyone is shooting a rig similar to 1 of these configurations and could post the weight I'd appreciate it.

Thanks, Don Dunlap

Don,

My wife's rifle is my original 10FP action trued-n-timed by SSS, with an SSS competition trigger set @ ~14 oz., with a Brux 30" fluted heavy Palma barrel sitting in a Stockade Prairie Dog Special stock. The stock has a fore-end rail for the bipod up front, and a Karsten adjustable cheekpiece and Graco adjustable buttplate in the rear. I didn't go with Rayhill's adjustable hardware as it didn't really appeal to me compared to other stuff I'm used to. The Stockade PDS stock works great though. You might find you need to open the barrel channel a bit to accommodate a heavier barrel contour than say, a factory varmint barrel. Nothing a piece of 1" wood dowel and some sand paper from the local hardware store can't fix, though.

Thanks Monte, I talked to Stockade this AM and have to say I like Kevin's stocks. I also like the Graco Buttpad. I'm still researching others. Thanks for the info.

A shooter at my range could not make weight with a Savage action, Choate Tactical stock and a 1.25 bull barrel, not sure what scope he ran but it was not a NF BR and looked smaller. I've seen another gun with a 1.25 bull barrel and a Manners stock, BAT 3-lug action, and March scope, and to make weight the shooter had to use a carbon fiber Center Shot bipod.

For my Savage FTR gun I used a Sharpshooter Supply LVT stock, which is laminate and is surprisingly light.

The main culprit there is the 1.250" bull barrel. There is no need for that big of a tube on an F/TR gun, IMO.

the one on the right is my mod.12 lrpv with a 30 shilen full bore barrel sightron 10x50x60 lrirmoa2 scope and HS Precision stock (the stock what comes with it from the factory) i weighted it with a electronic fish scale and it says 16.7 lbs as it sits with a harris bipod.

I have a 30 in Criterion Bull on a target action with SSS LVT stock and NF BR it weighs in at nearly 17 lbs. I shoot off of a Harris for now because I'm pretty sure the only other bipod I can make weight with is the new sinclair. I would find the lightest stock you can if your planning on using anything other than a convential type bipod. I'd be willing to bet there is no way the Choate will make weight.

Thanks everyone for verygood replies. I've bought a VLP from Hotshot and I'm looking hard at a Werks Bipod, they weigh 2 lbs.

I shot my friend's F-T/r in .223 today that sits in the Choate stock. I will tell you that the Choate stock is not for me! First, the bottom of the butt stock is flat. I slide my rear bag to make elevation adjustments, so that didn't work. Second, the cheekpiece is very slick, and I couldn't get a consistent cheek weld when I started to sweat a little. The stock is also very heavy! I advised him to go back the the B&C Medalist.

jb, I agree with you on that. I like to be able to make elevation ajustments in the rear with my bag. By this I mean sliding the bag forward or rearward depending on the need. I'm starting to believe making weight will not be an issue, thow it may be close with my choices. The Werks bipod is 2 lbs. I purposely stayed away from the Chote because of the weight. Stockade stocks are nice, but I will not deal with a company that for more $ will bump others and put you in front of their orders. To some this may be fine, but it is not for me. I want my stuff fast, quick, and in a hurry, but would rather wait my turn. The VLP stock is almost identical to Savage's FTR stock. I have high hopes for this stock, if it does not work out for me and don't like it for some reason I'll try something else.

You guys know that mcmillan, manners and most other stock builders will inlet for the savage right? I had my eyes on a robertson composites GBF stock until the company folded. There are a few other bipods that'll give you some more weight to play with, both the star shooter carbon fiber bipod and the mystic mpod come in under 2 lbs, the MPOD comes in at 13 ounces!!

The reason I have stayed with B&C and HS Precision is they come with the aluminum bedding block. That's one less thing I have to worry about. I have never bedded an action and maybe I will never have to!

jp, last weekend I was down south fl. and stayed at teele1's house. We have been friends for years and everytime we get together we do gun related stuff. This time we took my McMillan A2 stock and put aluminum pillars and bedded the action. It came out perfect as always. I run CDI bottom metal on this stock and my B&C Medalist. I bed all my stock, it's a mental thing. If I ever get a Widden stock I may not bed that one.
