ftr .223 build

I looking to build a ftr rig for my son. I need a preferred barrel length, contour and twist. I would like to get a barrel ordered for this winter. Also need reamer specs. I would like to shoot 80 & 90 grainers.

Thanks
Scott

May not be for everyone, but I bought a Savage LRPV with 26", 7 twist. It's got a good stock and good trigger. My 80 A-Max load will put 5 into the .6's at 200 repeatably. Haven't shot it at 600 yet, but I have no reason to believe it won't perform. You could have one of these rifles in days instead of weeks or months.

I'm looking very hard at the F/TR savage 1-7. I really can't decide if that's the way to go or a switch barrel.

Good Morning,

I have the Savage F/TR 223. She shot a 2.5" group at a local 600 yard BR shoot this spring. I was great beating out 6 BR's and 6.4X284's to win Factory Class with my peashooter. She loves the 80 GR Bergers in front of Varget.

If it were my Son, I'd take a hard look at the Savage F/TR before I built a custom rifle for him.

A friend of mine has an F-T/r. I got higher velocities from my LRPV and I much prefer the left port! The throat on the LRPV is much shorter and I suspect that's why I got increased velocities.

Guys, I have a LRPV 223 with a 1:7 twist barrel and am having one hell of a time getting it to shoot the "heavies".

Mind sharing load data?

Luckily all Savages are switch barrels.... ;)

Here's what works for me:

Berger 80 gr VLD, CCI 450 Primers, 24.4 GR Varget, Lapua Brass, .0020" off the lands. I tried the 90's, but I couldn't get them to shoot as well as the 80's.

I agree that the Dual Port is nice on the LRPV, I have one in 6BR and she's a dream to shoot. But, the RBRP isn't that hard to get used to. The barrel on my F/TR isn't going any where, but it's nice to have the option to change it out if I wanted to.

I tried the 90 BTLR's but I pierced a primer before I got to the velocity I wanted. The rifle is a fair weather, money saver anyway, so the 80 A-Max's fit my need.

I love my .223 as an F T/R rig. Everytime I shoot it, it still makes me laugh. I built my own off a Savage 12 Varmint Action...... just the standard action. I shoot a 90 gr Berger VLD with PP 2000 MR, Lapua Brass and RP 7.5 primers. The load is jammed. I get 3050 fps out of a 28 inch Shilen Select Match 1-7 twist bull barrel. I won't publish the grain amount, but it's not much more then a RL 15 or Varget Load. Everyone talks about the 90 gr being picky..... maybe I got lucky, but I've shot this load out to 1145 yards and it works. The Savage Mod 12 F T/R is ok.... just a the LRPV..... You can have all the wiz-bang gadgets in your action and scope, but if the barrel can't perform, you're still in a mess. The basic Savage Action will do anything you need it too....spend the money on a good stock, trigger and barrel.

I agree. Check out the target I just posted under this section with the 75gr amaxs. Box stock savage 10 action, mcgowen 7 twist.

The other option I have is re barreling the savage f class I already have. I would make it a switch barrel and probably a different stock. So back to the original question, what barrel length, contour and twist? Then I would need a good ftr stock for a savage action. How about a good dual purpose stock, for f open and ftr?

Thanks
Scott

What is the screw spacing on your action? Is it a 3 screw? I have an F-T/r stock on my F-Open rifle and would prefer an F-Open stock.

So I ordered a SS Bartlein .218 bore, 5R, 1-7 in heavy Palma to finish at 30". Now I need a good reamer spec. If I order it with a throat for 90's will it shoot 80's ok?

Thanks
Scott
