Frustrating F/TR

I am tring to find a load for a 210 SMK in my .308. It is a Savage target action with a 1/10 McGowen. The barrel is throated long enough that the bullet can be seated out without the pressure ring going below neck shoulder junction. The action has been timed and trued by Fred Moreo of SSS. It is in a Brux aluminum chassis.(yes I said Brux!) I have most powders available. Brass is Lapua, weighed prepped and neck turned. Bullets have been sorted , trimmed and tipped. All charge with a PrometheusII within .010 of a grain. Seated with a 21st Century Hydrpress at 24to26 lbs pressure. Using .002 neck tension. Just can't seem to find a load that will group or show good chrono results(Magnetospeed) any educated info appreciated.ounts and rings are tight on a 10-50 Sightron action screws torqued to 40 in Lbs.

Jvon,
Judging by the tools you're using you're way out on the tip of the bell curve. I assume you're an experienced hand loader and know how to use the tools that you have.

I would look at your MS numbers and see what loads gave you your best SD numbers and collated them to your targets. If no pattern emerges, then the thing to do is buy a box of Federal GMM 168 grain and shoot 5 shot groups. If they don't do well, then you clearly have an expensive tomato stake.

I have no doubt you tried this but shoot it without the Magnetospeed. What torque are you using for your action screws? I imagine it may be possible that this particular barrel may not stabilize the 210s. Any lighter weights that you can try for comparison?

Mike, I think a 10" twist is good for the 210 Sierra. I've shot 230 Berger Hybrid Targets in a .308 Win 10" twist with very good results. [br]
What powder(s) have you tried? What primers? How much are you jumping them?

Send me the gun and the Promethius. I'll get a hammering load developed for you and send you the gun back, deal? Joking aside if you can't get it to shoot with Varget around 42 grains or 4350 around 46-47 in large primer Lapua brass I would say you have a barrel or bedding issue.

I had best luck in my ftr savage shooting imr 4007 sc. I was also a good bit above book max. What are your groups looking like? Scattered or stringing? Horizontal-verticle? The only time I had a gun that flat out wouldn't shoot was a twist to fast for my bullet weight. I shot 200gr out of mine but settled on 175s.

Good Morning,

I'm shooting a 1/10 twist Shilin barrel on a Savage Target action. After trying 4 or 5 different bullet/powder combinations, I ended up shooting the 185 Bergers with Varget. I'm only shooting them at 2600 FPS, but they group very well at 600 yards. Good enough to win the last F/TR match I shot them in. Try them, I think you'll like them.

Ken

185 Jag's or the 190 VLD's works for me in 3-308 10 twist barrels. These also work great in a 12 twist barrel.

Dennis

PS: I have never tried anything heavier.

has that barrel ever shot good? Trying an internet good 308 load with a different bullet would be an easy test. Has that barrel/action ever shot good in another stock?

I've run 200hybrid, 208 Amax, JLK 210LBTVLD, and 215 hybrids for F/TR.

The 208's and 210's worked well in an 11 twist barrel. I didn't try the 215 until I was running a 10 twist.

The 210 class bullets, in my experience, do not like being pushed to the max in 30" barrels. I think that is why you will find a lot of folks still running the 185's.

Try Varget. Start low (and I mean 2400 fps low) and work up. It does shoot, but may not be the velocity of your dreams (or the claims of internet high-masters). Once you find a reasonable charge window, move the seating depth .003" at a time until it shoots really good groups.

I shoot the 200 and 215 hybrids in 30 inch barrels, never shot the 210 bullets and know nothing about them......What would you consider "pushed to the max" velocity for the 210s?.......Just curious.

Sounds like your reloading isn't lacking and a 10 twist should definately stabilize that bullet. Not sure what your problem could be if you tried multiple powders, primers, seating depths, good bedding job, and everything is tight on the rifle and scope. Other than the scope screwing up or the barrel just doesn't like that particular bullet for some reason im not sure what it could be. How does it shoot with a different bullet?
