Front rest?

i got to shoot my savage 6br yesterday and the rest i have for it is the caldwell rock. it shot good at 100 and 200 yards, but i could not get a angle to shoot any farther. What should i do? am i just not working it right?

go to sinclair international's website and buy one of their front rests. you can pick one up for about $180. about the only thing that a caldwell is good for is the hunter that goes out once a year to check his zero before the big hunt.

There are several options for you to upgrade to. Farley, J&J, SEB, Hart and several others. Just depends on how much you want to spend.

there isnt any legs i could put on it? Dont have that much too spend at this point, as my wife and i just had a baby. looking for a cheaper fix

I'm sure you could make a different set of feet for it if you wanted. Using a shorter rear bag might be another option. Also on Caldwells site they sell a taller center post as another option.

what i am hearing is that you can not get the rest with the front bag to go high enough. so you have to lower the rear bag or rear of the bench. you can raise the rest with longer feet. the bolts should not be hard to find and pointing is not super necessary, but may help. or make a 2inch high platform to set the rest on made of 2 x6 lumber. if it is your bench just build it to suit and raise the front an inch or 2.
i had to do that with my bench when i poured it, no problems.
just a few cheap ways out.

Doesn't that model have two height adjustments? A large smooth sliding shaft and then a threaded adjustment inside that shaft? Sure seems like that would be more than enough to accommodate elevation to 300 yards even on a terraced range, unless you are using a gernade launcher.

Aside from that you either need something to block up the front rest or somehow lower the back rest.

Congrats on the child too Josh.

As for your Caldwell. Thats one of the highest noncoaxial rests on the market. The problem I (and others) always had with it is not being able to get it low enough!!! Always had to throw a block under the rear bag.
What are you using for a rear bag? Is your Bench way out of level?

the dench is not unlevel, but the targets are a little at a elevated. im useing a regular protecktor. I guess ill just build a platform for the front rest. It sounds like the easiest way to fix it. but ill have to look at caldwell site

I'm pretty certain Otters advice is spot on.
There is a sleeve the mariner wheel rides on and shaft runs through. You should be able to raise that sleeve to get some extra height then lock it down. Gotta admit I never tried it but from memory it should work. If not...

Should'nt be hard to get some longer screws at the Hardware store. As long as you tighten the set nuts wobble should'nt be much of a factor. If you do go that route heres a tip. For the rear screw used for fine tuning elevation. Get a rubber fender washer (thin). Fit that between the frame and set nut. That will keep the tension on the threads to reduce wobble while still allowing some minor adjustments without needing to relock the nut.
My Cowan has long screws with too much slop. Lock the fronts tight and rubber in the back solved the wobble and lets me fine tune fast without disturbing the entire set up ;)

I have a Caldwell rock front rest and I have been able to shoot out to 300 yds no problem! I'm using a Shooters Ridge rear bag, not as nice as a Protektor but it works. What model Savage do you have? If it is an F-class target model, you may have to get a lower rear bag to accomodate the drop.

If that "Rock" isn't tall enough, you'd sure better check any prospective replacement for being tall enough.

When I first started out, I had one and had the reverse problem. I had to put a spacer under my (already tall) rear bag to shoot downhill.

If it is too tall, you can get someone to mill some of the space on the bottom of the feet off. That will buy you some down-angle.

If you're shooting up hill and it's not tall enough, I'd look at a shorter rear bag and some kind of spacer under the rest in front. You'd have to be careful with that, though, instability there isn't a good thing.

On a different front. In the future, if you decide you need a better front rest, you can get a ShadeTree joystick top for that Caldwell base. When you do, talk to Butch about it and talk to him about mods to make it not so tall.
