Freebore on Rem 700

Not sure but my buddy has a rem 700 308 and its hard to get most bullets to touch the rifling. Amongst our prarie dog clan he is known as "deepthroat"

Like most factory chamberings, it could be any length, but you can bet it will be long enough to safely chamber the heaviest/ longest bullet that is likely to be used in that chambering.

For the 30-06 that would probably be the 220 gr. round nose. Forget about trying to seat the short, lightweight bullets anywhere close to the lands & still keep the bullet inside the case neck.

If you have the rifle in your hands, take a measurement with the Stoney Point/ Hornady Chamber O.A.L. Gauge.

Just one of the reasons I do not have much use for a factory chambering.

In my .243 and 30-06 the throat was too long to seat a Vld to touch the lands and still mag feed. I have found that the new Berger Saami hunting hybrids allow me to do both and accuracy is just as good as with the vld. Just something to try if you find the throat is too long.

In my old Rem 308, a 168gr SMK nearly falls out the case when touching the lands and grooves. But my factory Savage 10FP .308 has about .080" freebore......the Remington shoots like crap and the Savage is somewhat of a tack driver.

From the 40's to the present,in .22 centerfire to .458 caliber freebore is approximately .200"-.220" in an OEM Rem SAAMI spec chamber.

At least in the hundreds & hundreds that I've measured over the years.

Each & every round fired is not helping matters.

I had a customer bring me a 700 Remington from the Remington Custom with a "5R" barrel the throat was .320" and the gun would not hold 4 1/2 inches at 100 yards. Rebarreld with a Rock Creek 5R 1.1:27 AMU contour and used a 95 Palma reamer opened up .075" and it shot .3moa. with Federal 168 GM factory loads.

Like above mentioned, probably a mile of freebore. I'd rebarrel if it didn't shoot to my standard otherwise you can have a smith whack an inch or so and rechamber to your likings

Just checked the freebore on my factory 700, 30 06, .230 freebore. Does not shoot worth !!!!!!!, need I say more. Factory ammo has a .070 jump.
