freebore in 223

Good day fellow gun nuts and self educated peeps.

I am wondering about a 0 (zero) freebore in a 223. I bought a ruger m77 in 223 for my kid a couple years ago. I normally only shoot reloads in it, as well as the 5 other 223's that are around here. cz, remington, mossberg, ruger. 55 grain nosler bt. All the others have no issue with the shells, but the ruger. It blows primers out and seperates brass 2/3rds up the case , not towards the bottom like the normal seperation (over resizing kinda thing or brass fatigue) as well as about 3 out of 5 not going off because there is no mark on the primer.. I sent it back to ruger to have the head space checked and they said it was all ok and of course my ammo was to blame or the problems. the other day i went to a local maker and am having a barrel threaded and had him look at it. He also checked the headspace and it was 3 thou. he shot it 2 times with factory fiocchi 40 gr ammo and the pressure signs where very high for 223ammo. primers were being pushed out and squared off around the hole. Then he took out the bore scope and took a look. there was 0 (no) freebore. we took a look in the cz i brought and it had abit. My reloads fit in and feed easy and they only run around the 3000 fps range.

So my question is : What do i have to do to it to make to work properly?. is it possible to hand ream it a touch to make adiquite space? or is there anything to do to it with out rebarreling a almost new rifle?

Powerfully confused as normal,

Doug C

I needed to extend the throat in my rifle recently and I just hand turned a reamer into the pre-existing chamber. I was careful to pull out every couple turns and measure headspace w/ go/no-go gauges. It was quite easy but I had the tools to spin the barrel off, mount it in a vice, gauges and reamer, etc.

Give it a try yourself, does not sound like you have much to loose.
