FPS for 284 & 7 saum

What are the realistic higher nodes (FPS) in the straight 284 and 7 saum
using 180g bullet, in a 30 inch barrel?
Wanting to know if there is much difference between the two.

I believe 2870 ish, 2940 ish, 3010 ish

none of it matters if miss wind call, let off, mirage etc., just a little less, not none, you get the point. I think bbl life would 2000 down to 900 depending pressure speed, in general.....if you shoot more go lower if shoot less hot rod it....I think

Looking for a future F open set up. Not going to do a ton of shooting with this one
so loading a bit warmer is realistic, but still want the accuracy.
I know, I want my cake and no weight gain...

Got a 32 inch barrel so a bit longer. But a straight 284 can be pushed up around 2900 or so. Seems happier slower than that though especially when it heats up in a 20 round string.

The nodes for a 30" barrel give a barrel time of 1.230ms and 1.375ms. Makes no difference what cartridge is used. Use QuickLoad to simulate your exact load with all parameters inserted as well as what burn rate mod you need for your batch of powder. There is a difference between both nodes and the 284WIN and
7 saum may not like one or the other. The straight 284 may not like 1.230ms, but the difference in muzzle velocity will cause a slight difference in wind sensitivity.
On that note, not many folks depend on high MV to make wind drift go away (as it can't be done!) so there will be wind drift no matter a straight 284 or 7 saum and 1.230ms or 1.375ms. just know the drift and go!

Not sure where you are getting your node values. The node tables I have show nodes for a 30" barrel at 1.273ms, 1.368ms, and 1.532ms.

I'm running a straight .284 with with a 28" barrel that shoots a Sierra 183gr very well. The barrel has a long throat with a cartridge OAL of 3.337", so shank depth is only .201". At near max pressure I am running right at 2700fps to reach the 1.431ms node. The extra 2" on your barrel will add another 50fps or so. That seems to be the max the .284 can push a 183gr MK.

I wish I could help with the 7SAUM, others will need to chime in.

Ranger, you have some of the best shooters in the country telling you speed doesn't matter accuracy does. But, just like them, you'll have to learn that for yourself. If you want to shorten the journey, get a 284 WIN and load it to 2825 fps. That is the winningest long-range FO cartridge at the most common speed that shoots well.

I looked at the 2020 Berger SWN equipment list, and in the F open
shooters used the straight 284, 3 times more than the next closest.
I've had 2 world class shooters, one a record holder tell me, it's not
the fastest, heaviest or highest B.C. bullet that usually wins any match.
It's hard to argue with success.

Any straight 284 I've seen has run into primer pockets opening up quickly when run above 2800fps with 180s. I have friends running straight 284s at either 2740fps or 2800fps with good barrel life and accuracy. SAUM's, I don't shoot one but have plenty of friends who do - speeds tend to vary between 2910-2940fps - barrel life around 1200 rounds which includes a setback anywhere between 600-800 rounds on it. I'm currently running a 280AI which has just over 1400 rounds through it and is shooting exceptionally well around 2800fps with 184s. I've had it up to 2900fps but 2800 is the sweet spot with this particular bullet.

I have been running a 284 Shehane in a 32" tube shooting 183 SMK's at 2,930 for three seasons now. I will admit that the tune window is smaller than the 2,840 window, so I need to pay attention to that. With that said, I put 600 plus rounds on the first bbl. and 900+ on the current barrel using the same 200 pieces of old paper boxed 6-5x284 brass. The pockets are still good and I've only lost two pieces to the necks coming off at the neck shoulder junction. (I run a .313 neck which is on the thin side for a 284)
Is this combination accurate? Well, I'm a sling shooter and it's good enough to win the optics class at the 2019 BSWN and a 4th this year.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd
