Forming 280 AI brass

I need to form 100 280 AI brass from Nosler 280 brass. Is using about 10gr Unique and Cream of wheat topped with TP going to be the way to do it? I would rather not burn through the powder and bullets or barrel or time or . . . of shooting all rounds with full-house loads.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thats how I do it w/ my 260AI- However I do a false shoulder of 7mm, then neck the 1st 2/3rd of the neck back to 6.5mm so the bolt closes hard on it. That way, there is no slop or movement and all of the energy goes towards blowing out the shoulders. I also use Crisco vs tp, but I assue either would work. I use 15gr. of unique, corn meal and crisco w/ the false shoulder. Works great. Smells bad, but not as bad as with COW.

NO Bullet...

just like skinnin a cat ,,,there are several ways to do it!!...I use aprox. 60% of the case capacity in Universal Clays (Unique-etc.) with a lil' wad of toilet paper....it doesnt stink or mess up the gun ...I use 30-06 brass so your method of using .280 parent brass may require a lil more or less....tinker with it...and this method is with NO BULLET !!!!!.....Roger

Probably the most reliable way to form Ackley cases is just to shoot loaded ammunition. Fireforming in my experience using handgun power never completely formed the case consistently and I always had to fire bullets to complete the job. Whenever I used enough handgun powder to sharpen the lines on the shoulder and neck, the neck sometimes stretched significantly.
The wear on the barrel is caused by the combustion of the powder and isn't increased by using a bullet. My advise to you is to use a middle of the road .280 load and form the cases right the first time. This is the benefit of the Ackley, the parent cartridge will almost shoot as well as the formed cartridge.

I don't know about 280AI but I will echo JWV. In my 6BRX there is a measurable difference between once FF brass and twice FF brass. Once will get me 90% of the way there but leave me a bit short.

i have 2 280 AI did the fire forming, this way, 280 r/p brass
a box of the cheapest 7mm bullets i could find (oldones the store wanted to getrid of, loaded 48 gr IMR 4350 and shot them, crisp-clean forming - this also lapped the barrell and had it ready to sight in with finished loads -

work up to and try 48gr h4350 and 140 sierra sbt/ nosler 140bt --3140fps<.400"
