Forming 22ppc brass

Has anyone formed 22ppc brass from the 220 Russian case? I was wondering after running the 220 Russian case through the 22ppc full length die and trimming, would the cases have to be necked turned or could they be loaded and fired. I have a Ruger factory 77vt rifle. I am sure the chamber does not have the tight tolerance like a custom rifle.

Load a dummy and see if it will chamber. I do not own a Ruger 22PPC, but I believe the Lapua 220 brass will require neck turning. May be able to neck down Norma 6PPC and not have to neck turn as the neck wall thickness of Norma brass is less.

Edited:
See attached link and scroll down to f d shuster's 11/1/08 post. Frank indicates that the chamber neck diameter of his Ruger 22PPC was .253. The unturned neck wall thickness of my Lapua 220 Russian cases is .0148. Thus, neck turning of my Lapua brass would be needed.

hotshot828 if you are going to size your cases with a full length die using neck bushings only you can turn the necks. Always try and find out what neck size your chamber is first, even if it is a standard factory chamber. Forming 22ppc brass is simple to do ;just load and fireform, only if it dont have a tight neck. I only know of 2 case manufactures, that's lapua and norma. I do believe that norma makes 22ppc cases that are allready 22ppc. if you are using Lapua cases make sure you know exactly what neck your gun has.

I have a Cooper Model 21 chambered in 22 PPC. It has a .252 chamber neck and the thickness of Lapua 220 Russian brass requires that it be turned. In fact, without turning the case neck I can not load a bullet using the Redding Competition Seater. No problems using Norma brass, it is nowhere near as thick as the Lapua. Both are very high quality. A chamber cast might be in order or you could call the manufacturer...they should be able to give you a good idea of your chamber's neck dimension. The Lapua is worth the trouble in my opinion because it lasts and lasts. I have fired one lot 16 times at full throttle and the pockets are still like new.

I have a couple of Rugers in 6ppc, and had one that was a 22ppc. Both the 6ppc and the 22ppc will need to have the necks turned if it is a factory barrel. At least that has been my experience with them in several rifles.

Also it has been my experience that the neck diameter of each these rifle seems to have a little difference in finished neck diameter..... so I can't tell you exactly what to turn it to. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. WD
