Forming 22BR

Hello everyone!
I'm a new member here and have a severe interest in 22BR. I have some 6mmBR brass that I'm reforming and ran into a bunch of remington 7mmBR brass. So I have a few questions now:
Is the larger flash hole going to be a pro/con or just different?
Can form the 22 from the 7 or should I neck down in steps (7-6-22)?

With the quality of the Lapua 6BR brass why would buy anything else.

The small flash hole has been known to be more accurate, but the old Remington 7 BR brass still shot very good.
You should neck down in steps if your using the 7BR brass..
The 6BR brass can be done in one step..

i ask myself...wwbrsd(what would a benchrest shooter do?) the small flash hole in the current 6mm BR lapua is magic. there may be some here with experience with the older 7mm stuff. i have 3 22 BRS and settled on bringing the neck down in steps...too sudden and i suspect some crushing of the neck and production of a donut. read on this site about using a 6 mmBR bullet seated die to partially size the neck folowed by a .248 bushing. leave the seating stem in the die and the sizing is done by the body of the die...neat. i polished the inside after removing the seating stem then lube the neck before. final step with the bushing doesn't need lube if using readings titanium bushings. you will love the 22 BR.

I understand the awesomeness of the Lapua brass. But there is a bit of sticker shock of buying 10 boxes. The reason I ask about the remington brass is that i have the opportunity to buy some for very cheap. Im not shooting matches and not winning anything. Just getting my feet wet with a new caliber, new style of shooting and a new rifle.

Also hows the old Norma brass? I ran into a bunch of new old brass.

That neck sizing method you mentioned sounds awesome haaha. Going to have to check it out. Im thinking about the RCBS Gold Medal FL/bushing die set. I read it as a dual duty die. With bushings it will size the neck, take the bushings out and its a FL die. Sounds pretty good, any thoughts?

Reading that forming post with a 6mm seater again, that sounds so awesome. Im going to follow that lead and see. Managed to score good on a set of 6br dies. Seems like they're going to be of good use now! Haaha thanks guys!

The old Rem. 7BR brass has a small primer. One of my 22BR's was done in the late 80's and I made brass for that gun from the Rem 7BR case. It's .035-.040" shorter than Lapua 6BR......back then 22BR chambers were spec'd to it because that's all there was. It's also not as strong as Lapua. Even if it's cheap, don't bother. The stuff is too short anyway plus today there's no need to even mess with it when much better Lapua is available.

Are you already sure of your chamber neck diameter? Sometimes neck turning is required which I suggest is better done before necking the cartridge down.

Have to figure out bushing sizes as well.

i have misled you about the initial sizing ... one uses a 22 BR bullet seater with the seating stem removed. my reading die works and i was more cautious by using a reading form and trim die next before the final bushing. this may not be necessary, however.

With a chamber neck diameter of 0.253", you will have to turn the necks.

For what it is worth, my unturned Lapua 6BR Norma brass, necked to 22 BR, measures .2495 when loaded with a Nosler 55GR Ballistic Tip. A .253 Neck should require no turning.

My Lapua cases measure 0.252" loaded - 0.001" clearance is pretty close.

Had to suggest.. all this older brass?? if its been fired most likely will be to hard to neck down. and how much shooting are u planning with 10 boxes? none of my busness but my B R is over 30 loadings and i still have most of the hundred i started with, If you try it and it works good use it. 1 thing I learned is lapua is great, norma is ok. and good luck

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I will pass on that 7br brass. Im looking to get a whole bunch of brass for long days of squirrel blasting.

I understand that the 6br is probably a better choice. A buddy of mine has the same idea. But I wanted to stick to a 22cal and plus I like the bench time of forming and annealing.

Hope my new Lapua brass will spare me the neck turning haaha. Thanks again for all the info guys!
