Forming 20 PPC from 220 Russian

Can you form 20 PPC from 220 Russian without having to form to 22 or 6mm PPC first??

Can I just neck the 220R down and seat a projectile hard into the lands and fire and it will form from there??

Yes or no??

Yes, you can go right from .220 Rus to .20 PPC. That's how I do it, but I do it in three steps. Small increments in neck reduction are important, especially towards the end, and especially when large changes in diameter are required,,such as from the 6mmBR to the .20BR). This will ensure no case mouth belling or wierd dimensions on the neck diameter when you're done. Since the .220 Rus neck is small to begin with it makes for easy forming down to .20. I first use a Redding .22BR FL die,with guts removed) to bring the neck OD to 0.242". I then use a 0.238" bushing in my Type-S neck sizer. My last step is the final fit bushing of 0.235". My rifle is a .237" neck that requires no neck turning so this is what works for me.

Another important thing is to make sure your headspace on the .220 Rus case is set for a slightly "crush fit" to ensure that the fire forming goes well. For my rifle I had to bump the .220Rus cases back just a tad to get them to fit into the chamber. I adjusted the die to a slight crush fit. The cases formed perfectly and I haven't lost a single case in over 500 fire formings. My form load mentioned in the .20 caliber article works very well as a hunting load. I shot this load and fire formed 500 cases in Montana and Wyoming last spring and I hardly ever missed my targets. A very accurate and effective fire form load. Look under the WarrenB form load if you want to try it. Use a longer drop tube and drop slowly to get it all in the case.
